If a company mostly sells products or services nationwide, and even internationally, would it still be worthwhile to spend time optimizing Local SEO?

Yeah definitely. If people are buying Worldwide they should be buying in your general vicinity locally. Plus it cuts the competition down it will be easier to rank locally for your keywords.

The big companies spend a ton on adwords.
There are some "local" searches that will get organic results
above maps for the big boys.

Big companies don't normally need to add their business to google
maps. It's a built-in perk for being big. Think about it. Who would
sit and submit 2,000+ Home Depot Stores?

I guess the title of the thread, Google Local For Big Companies, is
not really about BIG companies, but decently-large, not universally known,
      companies. Or another such animal.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

Exactly, a ton of people don't get this. The real big companies like OP mentioned do NOT go though each query and add their business, if they're on adwords Google takes care of everything automatically.

If you do business nationwide or internationally but you're not one of those well known companies then you'll have to do everything yourself and it may or may not be worth it. You just have to do it yourself to figure that out.

They All Told Me Making Money Online Was Just A Scam For The Gullible... Even Though I Was Already Pulling In $1k/Day. Now You Say My Resellers Can Not Make $1k/day But...
