I work about 8 to 10 hours a day. When I'm not working on building a site or writing content, I'm working on off-site SEO. Depending on whether I'm trying to move a new site up in the SERPs or not, I spend anywhere from half to 3/4 of my day building links.

I'm not an expert, but here's my day-t0-day SEO tasks on my websites: Contents, backlinks, contents, and more backlinks.. Boring huh?

1. constant link search
2. email outreach, actual link building and content strategy planning/creation
3. build relationships and visibility in targeted industry through activity based methodologies such as blog comments, forums, social networking.
4. research and learn more about the trade as much as possible

That's pretty much it.

Also the quality of content should be acceptable. And the backlinks should have higher possible PR.

Building lots of high quality links with varied anchor text = good rankings

Diversify your link profile and only seek quality sources..Quality is more important than quantity:
1)Press releases
2)Social media
3)Blog comment
4)Article marketing

It is hard to give a detailed response in terms of how much seo you should do each day because that totally depends on what work you have on. So for example if you are running a website for selling chairs, then much of your day will be spent running your chair selling business and so you wont have massise of time to dedicate to seo.

So in this situation you should be looking to outsource it to a consultant or company that is good and dedicated to doing your seo.

If you find that you have the time and want to do it yourself then you need to be looking at the following.

- Link building, but quality links off good sites, content relevant sites, decent page rank and anchor text links. All these are essentialy to success in link building.

- Article marketing. This means writing 500 to 1000 word articles all originally written about subjects related to your profession. Then put them on article websites or guest blog on blogs related to your subject and market. Then get anchor text backlinks off these articles.

- Blog section/ news section. One thing you should do is on your own website is have your own news section that you update each day with 200/300 words which takes about 30 mins. Overtime this will help Google see you as more relevant and give you more authority.

Truth is there are plenty of other things to do but these are core elements and should be enough to tie you over. Key is to keep your seo white hat seo i.e. dont try and trick the search engines.
