What (in your experience) is the best free analytical tool for checking backlinks and other SEO activities?

By best I mean the most consistent.

  I don't have chrome, I downloaded it before but it had glitches. This was when chrome was still in its infancy but it really did not like safari. :/

Hey,

Backlinks watch is good for sure...though lots of extraneous stuff going on there as well.

SEO Quake - great for ID'ing Pagerank of a given page, as well as in the search results. Will also order the search results in ascending/descending order along with a lot of data on inbound links, etc...and some other data points I'm not even sure what they do!!
Cherry Picker - Free download with the usual pitch, but it works great for id'ing niches.

Try these for backlinks as well as other niche and SEO activities including inbound links for a given page, keywords for a page and a pages pagerank

I like to use Cute Rank.net for checking out my rankings on Google. A lot of people use Rank Checker, but I have found that Rank Checker isn't always accurate and Cute Rank is spot on. It's free for one site and then you can upgrade for multiple sites.
