Why does Google reveal PageRank in the first place?

I feel like PageRank is just a metric we all take for granted, but I'm curious to know why Google even chooses to reveal the PageRank of websites in the first place?

Clearly it's useful for us (especially as SEOs), but Google has no obligation to reveal the results of a formula they created. How does it serve them to release this information?

Actually, the last couple years, G has admitted that PR has less of an impact in the SEO world.

Also, you must remember that it is part of their spam-elimiation programs.

They have suggested that if a site has too many "dofollow" links pointing to it with a comparitively low amount of "nofollow" links it can be flagged as an unnatural backlinking plan.

I would assume the same scenario goes with PR. Although PR and do-follow links ARE better than no-follow links with no PR, too many of them can be seen as unnatural link building by Google.

Well, this is precisely why I would expect Google NOT to reveal PageRank publicly. If spammers can't tell which blogs are high PR and which are not, they wouldn't waste as much time commenting. At least that's my thought.
