I've heard a lot of different advice on keyword research, what is the minimum number of searches etc. I would like to pose this question to the warriors. What do you consider a good number of searches per month on a keyword, assuming it's a buying keyword and you would stand a chance at beating the competition for ranking high in the SERPS? I've heard so many differing opinions that it's left me a bit confused, although I suspect I'll probably end up with the same thing here....

You're asking the magical question I too have heard many different opinions on this topic. Some say play small, others say go to the big markets like make money online or dating. Overall, I would say go with what you feel most comfortable with, be it big or small. I think I have a couple of guides that say to go with something that's in the region of 10k per month. I have another one that says go with the huge amount of searches (like 200k per month) and use a WP plugin like Scrapebox to build backlinks to the site.
