Do you think I can advertise in Adwords this way?

I've got a product on a third party site like Barnes and Noble (online) and I was thinking of trying Adwords to promote it. But I want to link to the sales page of the product at the third party site, which obviously is not owned by me.

Can one do this or do you have to actually own the URL you are directing the user to?

It depends on a few things. First, does the site allow direct
linking in adwords? Many don't. Which means you could not
show the correct url in the ad. If they allow it, what does the
product page look like? It would have to follow the TOS of
adwords. If both cases are good, so are you.

If not, there may be a way around it using an affiliate link on a page
you own. I can only comment on a similar affiliate, amazon. Amazon allows
you to place code on your site, the link puts it in your shopping
cart if you click the "buy from amazon." Not sure if that qualifies
as being able to buy the product directly.

To be honest, I don't think adwords is the way to go for such a product.

If I misread your post, and it's YOUR product, my guess would be to
sell it yourself rather than go through the other site.

So what if a person sells there own published book or some other type of physical product on a big site like Amazon, can they use Adwords to advertise to their product link on that site?

Is it part of their inventory, or 3rd party? That is, do you ship or do they?
I suppose it's a moot point, except whether they allow their domain in an
adsense ad, and you can buy the product directly from the landing page.

Keep in mind that this is why you put stuff on sites like amazon. Letting them
do all the work. Unless you are going for other search terms than the title of
        the products.

I found something you may be interested in:

It looks like amazon does not pay for direct linking via adwords to amazon, and
your account may be closed. So, you would have to link to a page with a buy button.

Other affiliates probably have similar TOS.

But the product is yours, so not sure if those points are moot as well. You still
        make money on the product.
