Is Social Bookmarking worth the effort?

Hi all and happy new year to everyone.

We have a number of sites up and making some money for us, but something we have never really bothered with is Social Bookmarking.

Apart from setting up a dozen or so accounts with the main sites, such as Digg and Technorati etc. we haven't done anything. We have created perhaps a few dozen links in total.

It just seems a lot of work. Whether this pays off I don't know.

So I am asking whether Social Bookmarking is worth doing.

It seems that there are quite a number of software offerings to help speed this up. But is it really worth it? Is google getting wise to all this kind of stuff?

Please don't just say yes or no, but give some examples of increased traffic and/or rankings. Or not as the case may be.

Many thanks,
Sam

Happy New Year to you too :-)

I think it is worth it, especially for the top bookmarking sites.

I don't think you have to over do it. Even 10 or 20 links a week can make some difference.

Doing nothing else to a new mini-site a couple of weeks ago, it got indexed quickly and is on page 2 for a nice keyword phrase. It already brings in about 60 visitors a day.

This was done manually, not using automated software. It took a few hours to get about 30 links.

Whether a software version is better I don't know.

As part of the marketing mix, bookmarking is just one ingredient. It isn't vital, but it adds to the pie.

You can outsource someone to do this type of work if you don't like it or don't know. Outsourcing is great and it doesn't cost you a lot.

Definitely take the time to social bookmark and allow visitors to bookmark for you by including the various "share this" icons on the pages of your site. Maybe it's a coincidence, but my e-com site has always had 1,500 to 3,000 URLs indexed in Google. It's been this way for years and years always fluctuating between 1,500 and 3,000. I never bothered to allow social bookmarking on it until two months ago. It now has 13,000 URLs indexed in Google and sales are up. Like I said, it might be a coincidence, but I'm taking it seriously.

SB usually helps bringing in fresh visitors to the website.
Creating repeat visitors should also be the focus of the marketing campaign.

People familiar with this kind of bookmarking will be the first to admit you'd be hard pressed to find too many disadvantages of social bookmarking. Anything that's as easy, fun and convenient as social bookmarking has to be good.

Social bookmarking is extremely useful in educational purposes. Instructors and professors are able to save and share research links and study guides with their colleagues as well as with the students. If a teacher finds some research material that they find extremely helpful and informative, they can share it with other teachers by adding it on the social bookmarking site with appropriate tag or keywords.

There are many opportunities to make new friends. Most of us have specific interests in life and social bookmarking sites are a good place to find others that share your interests. If you find articles or websites that interest you and the same user repeatedly submits them, you can check out the user's profile and add them as a friend. Many new relationships, personal and business, have started through this new way of communication.

Definitely worth it for me - especially when people find my sites through the social bookmarking sites and forward them to their friends

It doesn't have to be super time-consuming. Get a cheap piece of software (I'm partial to Incansoft) or sign up for Onlywire - heck, even outsourcing htis stuff is pretty cheap - I think you'll find the results worth the minimum amount of effort needed.

Read somewhere else in this site that Google has all but admitted that social bookmarking will play an increasingly important role in rankings. So yes, it is important is will continue to become even more critical.

Done in conjunction with other backlink link building methods it's very definitely worth it.

If it's all you do you may as well not do it at all as building backlinks is one of those synergy things.

I think "we" tend to overthink what google thinks sometimes. The percentage of internet marketers is so small in the over all total of people bookmarking that this will always be a great tool. Just be smart about your titles and keywords that you submit. Change them up every 4-5 posts and keep it around 10-12 links initially then spread out some more over time so it looks more organic to the search engines. Onlywire is great once you get all your usernames/passwords stored. They have a free account too if you just want to test it out.
