Seriously. If Google has discontinued toolbar pagerank, which they did for at least the remainder of last year, that makes it pretty tough to know who is a trusted resource in terms of linking out. As far as link exchange goes, be wary of site that claim high PR because you never know if it is still legit.

I didn't say links weren't important. I said "artificial backlinking" aka tens of thousands of spam links created by you, your hired hands, or bots is getting a kick to the shins as it should.

if anything eliminating the page rank of websites will only create more spam backlinks, people will not known what websites to target to get there High pr links that give them the awesome link juice, so you know what they are going to do instead to rank higher in the serps? there going to spam the living **** out of every website on the internet hoping to hit a few high pr sites during there submissions; it will hardly eliminate spam.

I didn't say it would eliminate spam either, that's impossible. I'm saying that it would appear google is working hard to devalue all those useless links, refocusing instead on content.

Let's face it. Most people create a spam site with a few spam pages and then spam countless links to it. If google continued to reward them it wouldn't do much for user experience.

That's why with this latest update you see a bunch of people on this forum complaining that all their backlinking effort has gone to waste because their site just plummeted in the serps.

I dont know about others complaining about their serps plummenting, but mine are going up and on one of my sites i used only xrumer to link it, right now i own position #1 #2 and #2 of a term with 59,000,000 competing pages and mostly authority sites, so you cant say google has done anything so far to de value those types of links.

It's nice to know we have google employees posting in the WF.

59,000,000 competing sites. Yeah. Sure. There are not even 1,000,000
sites worth visiting. I think you need a refresher on what competing
sites actually are. They only number in the hundreds, most likely.

Just because there are 5,000 books in a library that mention the word dog,
only the dozen books in the dog section would be competing when people
are looking for info on dogs.

Getting back to the topic, I like how the google employees have informed us
that they stopped PR last year. That's great to know. Especially on the
            toolbar. Keep us updated!

For people who are fairly new in I.M is it still a good idea to build links to other sites, or is good content going to work all of a sudden and push you up the rankings?

There's nothing 'all of a sudden' about it. Creating good content has always been a winning strategy, and IMO it's the only one that will work long-term. Instead of trying to figure out the latest way to game the search engines, only to have the algo change and lose all of your hard word, you could spend your time creating content that will bring you traffic for the rest of your life.

I'm sitting here building out my site and checking my traffic levels and sources every day and I'm starting to realize that I don't really care if I ever reach the top spot for any particular keyword. My traffic is trickling in from so many different searches that it's slowly but surely becoming a stream, a river, and eventually a raging torrent.

Lets hope this is the case, google search results are getting so cluttered with garbage now its not funny.

Always check the number of backlinks...and check few of them individually...because the owners of faked PR sites don't even bother to gain hundred backlinks

You can still base a site's authority through Mozrank (link profile) and through Alexa (traffic rank).
