Hey, everyone.
I’d like to share a step-by-step method for building 6 high quality backlinks for your websites in about 45 minutes. When finished, each of the 6 backlinks will, themselves, have their own backlinks propping them up. And on top of that, the content from the 6 backlinks will be very relevant to your webpage. Your webpage will move up in the search engines because of the backlinks, and you’ll also drive actual traffic from the 6 backlinks to your website.

[January 10th Update] The webpage I used to demonstrate this technique (shown below) is now ranked #2 in Google, and I only used 6 backlinks.

[January 15th Update] I've gotten a few comments from readers who are a little intimidated by the level of detail in the plan below. Yes, it's a bit complicated at first glance, but if you follow the plan, step-by-step, you can't go wrong. And you'll be done in about 45 minutes.

[January 16th Update] This thread is developing with some really good information and tips. Be sure to read the whole thing.

[January 24th Update] We got some more great feedback today. This, from jtpada:

This is powerful, buddy!! Thanks for sharing!!

P.S.: One more thing.... the back links from the article directories are not even credited yet in yahoo site explorer. Kinda amazed how instant Google´s reaction is here... ;-)
[March 15th Update] I've had a number of requests lately via PM from website owners asking if I can be hired to employ this strategy for them, but I've got my hands full at the moment with new product launches. I'm also busy creating new affiliate resources for my affiliates... So if you feel you have the skills to employ this method for others, then feel free to leave a reply in the thread offering your services. Let everyone know to PM you if you're available to be hired to work this strategy. You'll probably get quite a few requests. You may also want to advertise your services in the Warriors for Hire Forum - just reference this post, and tell people you'll build 6 Powerful Backlinks for people exactly as described.

[April 6th Update] The webpage I used to demonstrate this technique (shown below) is still ranked on the first page of Google.

[August 28th Update] The webpage I used to demonstrate this technique (shown below) has now fallen to the second page of Google.

[December 30th Update] One year later - The webpage I used to demonstrate this technique is now on the third page of Google. So - bottom line - I was able to rank on Google's first page for 8 months using this technique. Then it dropped to the 2nd page of Google. And a year later, the page still has some value in the SERPs as evidenced by it's location on Google's 3rd page. Not bad for 45 minutes of work!

[End Updates]

So, how is this done? You’re essentially going to build a link wheel. But this is no ordinary link wheel. It has a powerful twist. I learned the basics for this technique from one of Vita Vee's amazing videos, but I've modified the idea in order to incorporate the power of article marketing.

Setting up link wheels with high quality article directories can be challenging because you don't know the URL of the published articles until they're published. This plan eliminates the need to go back into your published articles multiple times to manually edit the links to point to other articles. It also eliminates the need to resubmit the articles after editing the links... and it eliminates the waiting (for the resubmitted articles to be approved a second time).

The results have been impressive (you can see them at the end of this post).

Here's the plan: You'll submit 6 original articles to 6 separate article directories. Each article will have a resource box with 2 links. One link will point to the website you’re promoting. The other link will point to one of the other 6 articles in their respective article directories. The linking structure will be such that none of the links are reciprocal and there are no "link-loops" (which many believe weakens the links). Additionally, this method will automatically create 5-30 automatic backlinks to each article (this will happen when you select 5-30 tags and categories when you submit each article for publication). Some of these backlinks may even have high PR with link juice that will pass through the two links in your article resource box to your website and to one of the other 6 articles.

The linking structure will look like this:

- The first link in the Article 1 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 4.

- The first link in the Article 2 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 1.

- The first link in the Article 3 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 4.

- The first link in the Article 4 resource box will point to your website, and the second link… we will not use a second link for this article.

- The first link in the Article 5 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 3.

- The first link in the Article 6 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 1.

Plus, as I said a moment ago, you’ll assign up to 30 tags to each article as well as 1 or 2 categories. Each tag and category will create a backlink to its article from the tag or category page within the article directory. For example, if you assign the category “business” to an article in Ezinearticles, this will create a backlink to your article at the following link: Business EzineArticles

By the way, that url has a PR of 5, so some of this link juice will pass through your article to your webpage. Your link won’t stay on this page forever. It'll eventually get bumped to a no PR page, but it's nice while it lasts, and you'll still keep the link.

Note: Most tag and category pages don't have any PR, but you can find a few that do.

Sound complicated? It's not. Here’s where the magic happens. I use a placeholder URL in my resource box for the initial submission of each article. The link temporarily points to a preselected page on my website. Once the article is approved, I use a simple “301 redirect” to redirect the link to another of the 6 articles in a different article directory. This does not require any modifications to the submitted article. I simply go into my wordpress dashboard and redirect the link (using the Pretty Links Lite plugin) to the URL for one of the other 6 articles.

Still sound complicated? Don’t worry. I’ll take you step-by-step through the process.

Here’s the plan:

Step 1
Gather everything you need. For this to method to be effective, you’ll need 7 original articles. They need to be well written, and they need to be unique. If you don’t have 7 unique articles ready to go, you can download some free ones from my website (multiple niches available - all unique - 100% free - click on the free WSO in my signature block).

Step 2
Pick the URL you want to promote. This can be your domain name, or it can be a page on your domain. It doesn’t matter. For my example, I’ll use a webpage on one of my websites.
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes/

Step 3
Pick the keyword or keyword phrase you’re targeting. This is the keyword that you want your webpage to rank for in the search engines. For my example, I’ll target:
“time management quotes”

Step 4
Now, for tracking purposes, designate each of your 7 articles with one of the following numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

You'll end up with:
Article #1
Article #2
Article #3
Article #4
Article #5
Article #6
Article #7

Now, post article #7 on YOUR website. This will create a placeholder webpage. The URL should be similar to the URL you’re promoting, but it should be appended with the “-7”. Here’s my example:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

Step 5
Add the plugin ‘Pretty Links Lite’ to your wordpress website. If you don’t use wordpress, that’s ok. You can do your 301 redirects manually.
For those who use wordpress, go to the new Pretty Links section of your wordpress backend and click ‘Add a pretty link’.

For ‘Target URL’ enter the URL to the article you posted on your website in step 4; This is Article #7. For my example, I entered:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

Now, for the pretty link, the URL should be the same as the main URL you’re promoting, but it should be appended with the number 1.
For my example, I used:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/

Leave the ‘Title’ field blank.

Click link options and under ‘Redirection Type’ select ‘301 (Permanent)’

Do not change any other options.

Click ‘Save’

Now, create 5 more Pretty Links by simply adding a different digit. My Pretty Links are:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-2/
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-3/
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-4/
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-5/
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-6/

For right now, each of these PrettyLinks should point to:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

So, when your articles are approved, the first link in each resource box will still point to the page you are promoting, and the second link in each resource box will now redirect to article #7 on YOUR website. For my example, this is:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

Note: The second link in each resource box is only temporarily pointing to Article #7 on your website, but after all your articles are approved, you will redirect the second link to one of the other articles in a different directory, and it will no longer point to Article #7 on your website.

Step 6
Open accounts at 6 different article directories. Or you can use existing accounts. I used these:
1. Ezinearticles(dot)com – provides DoFollow links
2. GoArticles(dot)com – provides DoFollow Links
3. AssociatedContent(dot)com – DoFollow in article body; NoFollow in “Resources” box
4. Articles.OnlineWebLibrary(dot)com – provides DoFollow Links
5. ArticlesBase(dot)com – provides NoFollow Links
6. Knol.Google(dot)com – provides DoFollow Links

Note: I’m one of the those who believe that Google values NoFollow to some extent. I think Google is suspicious of link profiles that are 100 percent DoFollow, so I sometimes use NoFollow links. If you disagree, that’s fine. Feel free to use only DoFollow directories.

Step 7
Create a resource box for each article (write the text you’ll use for each resource box), and include two links. Link should one point to the URL you’re trying to promote. For my example, I used:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes/

Link one is the same for all 6 resource boxes. Link two is different for each resource box. It corresponds with the pretty links you already set up. Here is how they look in my case:

My second link in the first article directory is:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/

My second link in the second directory is:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-2/

My second link in the third directory is:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-3/

My second link in the fourth directory is:
Don not use a second link for this article.

My second link in the fifth directory is:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-5/

My second link in the sixth directory is:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-6/

Note: The anchor text for Link one in each resource box is your targeted keyword phrase. The anchor text for Link two in each resource box should be different than the targeted phrase, but related.

So, the resource box for Article 1 will look something like this:
John Smith is a successful writer and businessman. He is devoted to helping people improve their productivity. You can read more at his <a href="http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes/">Time Management Quotes</a> webpage. He also has more Time Management Quotes here: <a href=“http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/">More Time Management Quotes</a>.

Step 8
Now it’s time to post your articles. Post one article to each of the 6 directories. If you’re using high quality directories (recommended), then there may be a manual review of your article, which could take up to a week or longer.

Step 9
As each article is approved, you need to record the URL of the newly approved article for future reference. Here are the actual links to my 6 approved articles:

Article 1
http://ezinearticles(dot)com/?Time-Management-Techniques-That-Work&id=5531894

Article 2
http://goarticles(dot)com/article/3822551

Article 3
http://www.associatedcontent(dot)com/article/6104728/time_management_quotes.html?cat=5

Article 4
http://articles(dot)onlineweblibrary(dot)com/Art/83787/37/Effective-Time-Management-Strategies.html

Article 5
http://www.articlesbase(dot)com/time-management-articles/time-management-quotes-3824009.html

Article 6
http://knol.google(dot)com/k/anonymous/motivational-time-management-quotes/1s5zf42w5zg0z/1#

Step 10
Once all articles are approved, go back to the Pretty Links plugin. Open the first Pretty Link, which should be appended with a “-1”. In my example, it was:
http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/

Now replace the targeted URL (which is appended with “-7”) with the actual URL of the newly approved article #4. In my case the URL is:
http://articles(dot)onlineweblibrary(dot)com/Art/83787/37/Effective-Time-Management-Strategies.html

Save the new Pretty Link.

Now, the link in your resource box in Article #1 will permanently forward to the actual URL for article #4, which is published on onlineweblibrary(dot)com. So, my article in EzineArticles now points to the webpage I'm promoting and to my article in onlineweblibrary(dot)com.

Repeat this process for the rest of the Pretty Links...

For Pretty Link ending in “-2” you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with “-7”) with the actual URL of the newly approved article #1 (which is published on EzineArticles).

For Pretty Link ending in “-3” you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with “-7”) with the actual URL of the newly approved article #4 (which is published on OnlineWebLibrary).

For Pretty Link ending in “-4…” leave it unchanged.

For Pretty Link ending in “-5” you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with “-7”) with the actual URL of the newly approved article #3 (which is published on Associated Content).

For Pretty Link ending in “-6” you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with “-7”) with the actual URL of the newly approved article #1 (which is published on EzineArticles).

When you finish, the second link in each resource box of each article of each directory will permanently point to another article in another directory.

The result is a link structure that looks like this:
Article 1 points to your website and to Article 4
Article 2 points to your website and to Article 1
Article 3 points to your website and to Article 4
Article 4 points to your website only (I don’t use a second link for this article because it creates a “link-loop”)
Article 5 points to your website and to Article 3
Article 6 points to your website and to Article 1

By the way, feel free to vary your link structure. For example, you can use this alternate link structure:

Article 1 => website and Article 2 and Article 6
Article 2 => website and Article 3 and Article 5
Article 3 => website and Article 1 and Article 4
Article 4 => website and Article 1 and Article 5
Article 5 => website and Article 3 and Article 6
Article 6 => website and Article 2 and Article 4

Note: If you use this alternate link structure, you’ll need to use article directories that allow three backlinks in the article body or resource box.

Conclusion:
I’ve found this type of cross-linking to be much more effective than just submitting articles to directories. In fact, this method has been sufficient for me to rank on the first page of Google for many low and mid competition keywords.

High competition keywords are a different story of course. These will require multiple iterations of this method. And, for super-competitive keywords, I usually combine this method with traditional article marketing.

By the way, if you were wondering, the webpage I used for this exercise currently ranks #2 (though it is bouncing around a bit) in Google for the keyword phrase: “Time Management Quotes” (no, this is not a super-competitive keyword phrase, but it does have 2400 exact match searches per month). I’m monetizing this page with Adsense and a CPA offer. This webpage is not making me rich, but it is generating some nice passive income.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a link-building technique that’s been very successful for me.

Let me know what you think about this technique and if you plan to try it. Also, feel free to leave your own tips.

Thanks!
-Tim

Everyone talks about to write articles and social bookmarking etc...

But instead of write an old boring article why not post a comment in Ezinearticle?

Is this backlink not so powerful when it's "only" a comment?

Instead of using the Pretty link redirect method, why not just go in to each article after they are approved and edit the second link accordingly, then ping the url?

Wouldn't this accomplish the same thing?

Hi Frank. Good question. Yes, you can just go back into the articles and edit the second links accordingly. But all the high quality article directories will require you to resubmit the article for approval, even if you only edit a link. I find that it's easier and quicker to just do a Pretty Link redirect rather than resubmit the article for approval. But if you prefer, you can indeed do a manual edit of the actual link in each article. It does accomplish the same thing.

You make a good point about having a plan. I know if I don't have some structure to follow my blogs end up hurting for traffic. I think Tim put a lot of thought into this method and I believe it can be extremely effective.

Yes, this is a link wheel, but it is distinctive in that it is an article directory link wheel, and it has a special method for saving time.

Setting up link wheels with high quality article directories can be challenging because you don't know the URL of the published articles until they are published. This plan eliminates the need to go back into your published articles multiple times to manually edit the links to point to other articles. It also eliminates the need to resubmit the articles after editing the links... and it eliminates the waiting (for the resubmitted articles to be approved a second time).

A 30 second adjustment with the Pretty Links eliminates all that.

Thought so.. Took some time to identify the real reason for creating the pretty links and the permanent re-directs.. You might want to clarify the reason for the procedure in the beginning of the description.. Makes it easier to follow.. :-) Thanks for a good post though..

It's a cool idea, but I wonder if having all of your re-direct links all coming from the same domain will have any adverse effects.
Especially if you are building a wider net of properties to link from. It's not very good camouflage.
              Thanks.
Hmm. Good point. You're right. It's not very good camouflage, is it? Using the same domain hasn't hurt thus far, but Google is a fickle (and clever) beast and may someday discover this method. For that reason, folks probably should not use this "footprint" for all their properties.

I'd probably ping once and bookmark once (to about 5 sites), but that's it.

Sorry you had to dig for the motive behind this technique... I just edited the main post so that other people don't have to dig. It's pretty clear now. Thanks.

Yes, there is evidence that Google is wise certain types of link wheels - those with reciprocal links... those that have link loops... and those that use the same Class C IP address.

The technique I've described in this thread avoids all of those pitfalls.

I think this works but you need some time to test. However, this seems to be a effective way but you still need a lot of different articles. In rest, the method is well explained. Thank you ! I will try this in some day !

Certainly worth checking out - I've bookmarked it to read again in detail.

Just out of curiosity, for your ranked #2 webpage you referred to, what's the PR, domain age and no. of backlinks for the top 3 sites like (excluding yourself, of course)?

    Sounds a little complex.

Are you not better off by promoting in each article backlinks to your site and then second backlinks points to your RSS feed for article marketing directory to give it extra link power?

Hmm. Good question. I guess we'd have to experiment to find out. Or, better yet. Maybe we combine the two methods. Maybe we do this:

1st link points to money site
2nd link points to another article
3rd link points to RSS feed

We'd have to find article directories that accept three links, but it just might work.

Yep. Most people don't build link wheels with article directories. It's just too much of a hassle. But if you use the redirect method I've described then that eliminates most of the hassle.

As a side note, there are a lot of folks who believe that Google is getting wise to link wheels. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, I doubt that article directories will bring much scrutiny since they aren't typically used in link wheels.

Even if they are targeted, this particular link wheel would be hard to spot since there are no reciprocal links. In fact, there aren't even any link loops.

I guess my only warning would be: If you decide to use this technique multiple times to promote one website, I'd vary the link structure and the number of articles for each iteration. I might even include some web 2.0 sites. And throw in a few RSS feeds (thanks robertkiyosaki for that idea).

Hmm. It depends on the niche and the keywords I'm targeting. If I'm targeting long tail keywords (for a CPA or Amazon Associate offer), I usually try to get traffic from people who are ready to purchase something.

For example, "self cleaning litter box reviews"
which has 590 exact match searches per month in Google

For this kind of phrase, I'll get 5-10 uniques per day. That's not much traffic, but these people are ready to buy. This = high conversion rates.

If I'm targeting high volume keywords just to get lots of traffic (for a site with CPM ads or CPC), then I can get between 400 and 1,000 uniques per day.

For example, "where is chuck norris"
which has 246,000 exact match searches per month in Google

By the way, I haven't targeted either of those particular phrases. Those are just examples. But I do target very similar ones. Oh, one more thing... if anyone decides to target the Chuck Norris phrase, let me know! I'm curious how much traffic that one will bring. I wouldn't expect many sales with that traffic, but I would expect lots of CPC clicks since these people are bored and are looking for something to click. Penny clicks, I'm sure, but it all adds up!

One last thing... go to Google and type "find chuck norris" in the search box; then click [I'm feeling lucky].

        Cheers

I'm pretty certain you'll see some decent results with this technique.

To help you out, I just went to my website and generated 1,000 unique travel articles for you (about 500 words each). By the way..i signed up on your free article site (different emails)..didnt get any email/password. Nothing in my mailbox. There was this ebay example article on your site, i refreshed in Firefox but the article stayed the same all the time.

Edit: Got the mail. The spun articles are REALLY good...but i see duplicates on other article sites ;(

Yes, my site is getting pretty popular, so some of the articles are popping up around the internet, but they're not duplicates. They might have some of the same phrases, but they pass copy scape, making them significantly unique. If you look for a single sentence or phrase on the internet, you'll likely find it. But if you look for the whole article, you'll never find it.

Well i played around with it more..it seems that although some sentences stay the same the articles itself would pass copy scape. The quality of the articles is REALLY very good and don't look spun *at all*. Might be ideal for mass distribution on article directories. I need to spend more time with this for sure.

Yes. I ran the same check in plagium. You'll note that the bubbles are very small indicating that only a few phrases in the article are the same. If you click on the links that plagium provides, you'll see that the articles are indeed quite different. Google sees this, too.

What makes this technique helpful is the fact that it is a concrete plan. I find that both myself and my staff are all over the place with link building. Each new day is a trial trying to think up ways to promote new sites.

And most articles that we read are so vague, we still have no real plan. I appreciate you Tim documenting everything so that it can be used by others as a framework from which to start.

The other problem I have had in the past is a personal thing. I hate giving article directories my good content. Everytime I write something to submit, I end up keeping it because I can't see the value in giving these guys my stuff.

On the other hand, I do gladly submit free content to other sites in my field, as I feel that might benefit me in a more productive fashion.

In any case, I think I have to assign this task to one of my staff members so we can see how it goes.

I do have a question, if you do not mind me asking. I noticed that you are creating free articles and putting them up on your site for download... Are you creating these articles from scratch?

If not, if you are spinning the articles, do you do the same for your submissions? Are they quality enough that you would put your own name on them?

Thx again for this wonderful "How To Guide". I am more than appreciative~!

I write some of them myself, but I purchase most of them from a provider (who's listed on my homepage). They're spinnable articles. In they're original form, they're 10,000 to 12,000 words long. When they're spun, they generate 400 to 600 word articles.

I appreciate you sharing the information. I'm curious about something. Earlier you stated

        - The first link in the Article 4 resource box will point to your website, and the second link... we will not use a second link for this article.
It appears that you have directed the links in the 1st and 4th article to two directories in you domain. What made you change the original setup? Thanks.

Hi Merlin. Thanks for the question. I posted these two articles early in the process before I had decided for certain what link structure I wanted to use. In the end, I decided that the 1st article should indeed point to the 4th, and the 4th should only point to the money page, which is what is written in the plan.

I just haven't gone back to those two articles to change the links to align exactly with the finalized plan. So, the link structure of my example articles does differ slightly from the plan I've described.

But I don't think it really matters exactly what link strucure is used. The point is to interconnect the articles in some way and to avoid reciprocal links and link loops. The plan I've described does just that.

Having said all that, I usually do follow the plan exactly as described.

Hi Michelle. Yes high PR root domains would make things easier, but I wasn't aware there were any pointing to my site. I remember posting a comment somewhere and posting a profile link somewhere, but that's it. And that was to my top domain, not to the webpage I used in this experiment.

What are the URLs of the high PR backlinks you're talking about?

I wonder if the articles are being syndicated...

Are you using all unique content for your articles? I wonder if it will be as effective if it's duplicate or spun content.

Also, I assume you're using the KW you're trying to rank your mainpage for to link between the sites, but do you do any SEO within the articles (KW density, etc.)?

Edit: I just realized that you said 100% unique articles in your post. I may test this with spun content and report back.

Actually, no. I use related KW phrases to link between articles, and I use my targeted KW phrase only for links to my money site.

Regarding on-site SEO, I usually make sure the KW phrase is in the title, in the KW meta tag, in the URL, and in one other place on the page, but that's it.

I think spun content works fine. In fact, that's what I usually use. Just make sure the articles are high quality. This will improve the odds of your articles getiing syndicated. Hi culpetm,

Thank you for the post, but I just have a few questions to clear up some of the confusion I'm having.

In Step 5, you state that all of the target urls for the pretty links will be that of the url for the article page we posted on our site, which has the appendage of -7. But in step 10, when we are supposed to change the targeted url, it says that the targeted url ends in -6 for the pretty links that end with -2, -3, -4, and -5. Did you mean to write -7, as you did for the pretty link ending in -6?

Also, I'm confused about the second link in the resource box for article 4. In the introduction, it says a second link will not be used for the resource box. However, Step 7 says that pretty link -4 will be the second link for fourth directory. And then Step 10 is saying to leave pretty link -4 unchanged. I'm afraid I don't follow.

Any help to clear this up will be appreciated.

Wow. Great catch, DynoMutt! That was a typo. I did mean to write -7. I have edited the original post to fix the problem.

I should have said that we will not use a second link in the fourth directory to point to another article; we'll just use it to point to another page on our website. I see how it's confusing, so I've edited step 7 to indicate that we will not use the link at all.

Thanks so much for pointing out those issues. They're fixed now.

I'd like to point out that this method is called a "link wheel." I use this exact same method for my sites and it WORKS. Do not close the wheel, as mentioned. Also, I used social bookmarking for each of the articles within the wheel. Your site will rise up really strong in the rankings. Thanks for posting this! Hi Culpetm,

Your thread is most appreciated... despite the fact that I didn't get all details... at 2.00am, what a surprise, ))) I'll post my question (if any) tomorrow.

I'm learning the business and so far I launched five bilingual sites which make me penny by penny. What I've noticed is that my pages in Russian perform better then pages in English by number of reasons. One of them, I would say main, is content. Pages in Russian are 100% unique, written by me, in English - articles from eZine - which I don't like at all - but have to use them because I don't trust my English.

I'll read your post tomorrow again, but now I would like to ask one simple question. I understand you submit all 7 articles at one go. In this case all of them have at least 1 link to other article which doesn't exist online yet. I started some kind of "link wheel" myself. Surely, you scheme is more complicated but better one. I though that first article should be to article directory with dofollow and high PR, but submitting other articles should be done after approval of first one.

Could you explain your point please.

      Many thanks in advance.

        Hi Nina,
You're exactly right. The links to the other articles don't exist yet. That's exactly why I use this method. The links don't have to exist. You can submit all the articles at one time using placeholder links. Then as each article is published, the actual url is created, and all you have to do is redirect your placeholder link to the real link (which takes about 30 seconds with the Pretty Links plugin).

The exact steps to do this are detailed in the original post.

It looks complicated, but if you follow the steps one at a time,
then it's very easy, and it'll only take 45 minutes.

Jenn, your enthusiasm is contagious! I'm certain you'll be pleased with you're results. Depending on the KW phrase, I'd expect some movement in the SERPs within a 2-3 weeks. If you don't see much improvement, then you probably have some stiff competition. In this case, I'd "wash, rinse, repeat" one or two more times. All the best!

When finished, each of the 6 backlinks will, themselves, have their own backlinks propping them up. And on top of that, the content from the 6 backlinks will be very relevant to your webpage. Your webpage will move up in the search engines because of the backlinks, and you'll also drive actual traffic from the 6 backlinks to your website.

[January 10th Edit] The webpage I use to demonstrate this technique (shown below) is now ranked #2 in Google, and I only used 6 backlinks.

[January 15th Edit] I've gotten a few comments from readers who are a little intimidated by the level of detail in the plan below. Yes, it's a bit complicated at first glance, but if you follow the plan, step-by-step, you can't go wrong. And you'll be done in about 45 minutes.

[January 16th Edit] This thread is developing with some really good information and tips. Be sure to read the whole thing.

So, how is this done? You're essentially going to build a link wheel. But this is no ordinary link wheel. It has a powerful twist. I learned the basics for this technique from one of Vita Vee's amazing videos, but I've modified the idea in order to incorporate the power of article marketing. The results have been impressive (more about this toward the end).

Here's the plan: You'll submit 6 original articles to 6 separate article directories. Each article will have a resource box with 2 links. One link will point to the website you're promoting.

    - The first link in the Article 4 resource box will point to your website, and the second link... we will not use a second link for this article.

    - The first link in the Article 5 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 3.

    - The first link in the Article 6 resource box will point to your website, and the second link will point to Article 1.

Plus, as I said a moment ago, you'll assign up to 30 tags to each article as well as 1 or 2 categories. Each tag and category will create a backlink to its article from the tag or category page within the article directory. For example, if you assign the category "business" to an article in Ezinearticles, this will create a backlink to your article at the following link: Business EzineArticles

By the way, that url has a PR of 5, so some of this link juice will pass through your article to your webpage. Your link won't stay on this page forever. It'll eventually get bumped to a no PR page, but it's nice while it lasts, and you'll still keep the link.

Note: Most tag and category pages don't have any PR, but you can find a few that do.

Sound complicated? It's not. Here's where the magic happens. I use a placeholder URL in my resource box for the initial submission of each article. The link temporarily points to a preselected page on my website. Once the article is approved, I use a simple "301 redirect" to redirect the link to another of the 6 articles in a different article directory. This does not require any modifications to the submitted article. I simply go into my wordpress dashboard and redirect the link (using the Pretty Links Lite plugin) to the URL for one of the other 6 articles.

Still sound complicated? Don't worry. I'll take you step-by-step through the process.

    Here's the plan:

    Step 1
Gather everything you need. For this to method to be effective, you'll need 7 original articles. They need to be well written, and they need to be unique. If you don't have 7 unique articles ready to go, you can download some free ones from my website (multiple topics available - all completely unique - 100% free).

    Step 2
Pick the URL you want to promote. This can be your domain name, or it can be a page on your domain. It doesn't matter. For my example, I'll use a webpage on one of my websites.
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes/

    Step 3
Pick the keyword or keyword phrase you're targeting. This is the keyword that you want your webpage to rank for in the search engines. For my example, I'll target:
    "time management quotes"

    Step 4
Now, for tracking purposes, designate each of your 7 articles with one of the following numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

    You'll end up with:
    Article #1
    Article #2
    Article #3
    Article #4
    Article #5
    Article #6
    Article #7

Now, post article #7 on YOUR website. This will create a placeholder webpage. The URL should be similar to the URL you're promoting, but it should be appended with the "-7". Here's my example:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

    Step 5
Add the plugin 'Pretty Links Lite' to your wordpress website. If you don't use wordpress, that's ok. You can do your 301 redirects manually.
For those who use wordpress, go to the new Pretty Links section of your wordpress backend and click 'Add a pretty link'.

For 'Target URL' enter the URL to the article you posted on your website in step 4; This is Article #7. For my example, I entered:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

Now, for the pretty link, the URL should be the same as the main URL you're promoting, but it should be appended with the number 1.
    For my example, I used:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/

    Leave the 'Title' field blank.

Click link options and under 'Redirection Type' select '301 (Permanent)'

Do not change any other options.

    Click 'Save'

Now, create 5 more Pretty Links by simply adding a different digit. My Pretty Links are:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-2/
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-3/
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-4/
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-5/
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-6/

For right now, each of these PrettyLinks should point to:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

So, when your articles are approved, the first link in each resource box will still point to the page you are promoting, and the second link in each resource box will now redirect to article #7 on YOUR website. For my example, this is:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7/

Note: The second link in each resource box is only temporarily pointing to Article #7 on your website, but after all your articles are approved, you will redirect the second link to one of the other articles in a different directory, and it will no longer point to Article #7 on your website.

    Step 6
Open accounts at 6 different article directories. Or you can use existing accounts. I used these:
    1. Ezinearticles(dot)com - provides DoFollow links
    2. GoArticles(dot)com - provides DoFollow Links
    3. AssociatedContent(dot)com - DoFollow in article body; NoFollow in "Resources" box
    4. Articles.OnlineWebLibrary(dot)com - provides DoFollow Links
    5. ArticlesBase(dot)com - provides NoFollow Links
    6. Knol.Google(dot)com - provides DoFollow Links

Note: I'm one of the those who believe that Google values NoFollow to some extent. I think Google is suspicious of link profiles that are 100 percent DoFollow, so I sometimes use NoFollow links. If you disagree, that's fine. Feel free to use only DoFollow directories.

    Step 7
Create a resource box for each article (write the text you'll use for each resource box), and include two links. Link should one point to the URL you're trying to promote. For my example, I used:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes/

Link one is the same for all 6 resource boxes. Link two is different for each resource box. It corresponds with the pretty links you already set up. Here is how they look in my case:

My second link in the first article directory is:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/

My second link in the second directory is:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-2/

My second link in the third directory is:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-3/

My second link in the fourth directory is:
Don not use a second link for this article.

My second link in the fifth directory is:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-5/

My second link in the sixth directory is:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-6/

Note: The anchor text for Link one in each resource box is your targeted keyword phrase. The anchor text for Link two in each resource box should be different than the targeted phrase, but related.

So, the resource box for Article 1 will look something like this:
John Smith is a successful writer and businessman. He is devoted to helping people improve their productivity. You can read more at his <a href="http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes/">Time Management Quotes</a> webpage. He also has more Time Management Quotes here: <a href="http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/">More Time Management Quotes</a>.

    Step 8
Now it's time to post your articles. Post one article to each of the 6 directories. If you're using high quality directories (recommended), then there may be a manual review of your article, which could take up to a week or longer.

    Step 9
As each article is approved, you need to record the URL of the newly approved article for future reference. Here are the actual links to my 6 approved articles:

    Article 1
    http://ezinearticles(dot)com/?Time-Management-Techniques-That-Work&id=5531894

    Article 2
    http://goarticles(dot)com/article/3822551

    Article 3
    http://www.associatedcontent(dot)com/article/6104728/time_management_quotes.html?cat=5

    Article 4
    http://articles(dot)onlineweblibrary(dot)com/Art/83787/37/Effective-Time-Management-Strategies.html

    Article 5
    http://www.articlesbase(dot)com/time-management-articles/time-management-quotes-3824009.html

    Article 6
    http://knol.google(dot)com/k/anonymous/motivational-time-management-quotes/1s5zf42w5zg0z/1#

    Step 10
Once all articles are approved, go back to the Pretty Links plugin. Open the first Pretty Link, which should be appended with a "-1". In my example, it was:
    http://www.askmymonkey(dot)com com/time-management/time-management-quotes-1/

Now replace the targeted URL (which is appended with "-7") with the actual URL of the newly approved article #4.

For Pretty Link ending in "-2" you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with "-7") with the actual URL of the newly approved article #1 (which is published on EzineArticles).

For Pretty Link ending in "-3" you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with "-7") with the actual URL of the newly approved article #4 (which is published on ArticleAlley).

For Pretty Link ending in "-4..." leave it unchanged.

For Pretty Link ending in "-5" you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with "-7") with the actual URL of the newly approved article #3 (which is published on Associated Content).

For Pretty Link ending in "-6" you will change the targeted URL (which is appended with "-7") with the actual URL of the newly approved article #1 (which is published on EzineArticles).

When you finish, the second link in each resource box of each article of each directory will permanently point to another article in another directory.

The result is a link structure that looks like this:
Article 1 points to your website and to Article 4
Article 2 points to your website and to Article 1
Article 3 points to your website and to Article 4
Article 4 points to your website only (I don't use a second link for this article because it creates a "link-loop")

Note: If you use this alternate link structure, you'll need to use article directories that allow three backlinks in the article body or resource box.

    Conclusion:
I've found this type of cross-linking to be much more effective than just submitting articles to directories. In fact, this method has been sufficient for me to rank on the first page of Google for many low and mid competition keywords.

High competition keywords are a different story of course. These will require multiple iterations of this method. And, for super-competitive keywords, I usually combine this method with traditional article marketing.

By the way, if you were wondering, the webpage I used for this exercise currently ranks #2 (though it is bouncing around a bit) in Google for the keyword phrase: "Time Management Quotes" (no, this is not a super-competitive keyword phrase, but it does have 2400 exact match searches per month). I'm monetizing this page with Adsense and a CPA offer. This webpage is not making me rich, but it is generating some nice passive income.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a link-building technique that's been very successful for me.

Let me know what you think about this technique and if you plan to try it. Also, feel free to leave your own tips.

    Thanks!
    -Tim
Well, thanks for the detailed nice post, but I believe you just made it more complicated sounding...

You could just have asked to create a one-way link wheel with the six (or if you want, more) articles. That's all there to it.

What a great idea. How long do you think it will be until google and the others pick up on this. Until them, happy writing and linking.

    Hey Tim

Really great post man. THe Chuck Norris thing was brilliant! As soon as I finished reading this thread I went out and created a wheel using your exact steps. So for everyone reading here it is:

I created a page and optimized it for my Keyword. This page was created about two weeks ago and is indexed but not in the top 100.

    Ok stats

Traffic according to Google Keyword Tool 2,400 searches exact and local
    Competition "In quotes" = 32,900
    Competition allintitle = 5,680

Ok so not that hard right? I created the articles and submitted them to

    EzineArticles
    Amazines
    GoArticles
    ArticleDashboard
    ArticleAlley

Yes only 5 and I created the accounts same time and surprisingly all but Article Alley and EzineArticles are approved. So I will monitor the rankings for a week and then repost the results and then depending on where things are I will either add more articles or try an addition to the strategy.

Thanks Tim for the outline. It is very rare I bother to try or test many peoples strategies but seeing as the effort you put in to the post I thought what the hell and of course the Chuck Norris thing made my day.

I encourage other Warriors to give it a try and post your results and then we can all compare notes and build on the system

      Hey, feedback ahead !

Did implement as advised on Friday, using just 6 articles and 6 article directories. 5 of the articles are approved already .... just ezinearticle still isn´t.

Find my site having jumped from Google ranking spot no 10 to no 1 in not even 2 days !

This is powerful, buddy!! Thanks for sharing!!

P.S.: One more thing.... the back links from the article directories are not even credited yet in yahoo site explorer. Kinda amazed how instant Google´s reaction is here... ;-)

Hi, I'm new here, and must say this website is filled with great info.

Concerning this post, it is most usefull and I consider using it starting next week.

Although it has me wondering: couldn't one achieve something similar using his websites? Ie: one has 30 websites, and on each website, he links to his 29 other websites. That's 29 backlinks for each website.

        Could something like this work?

          @NWW

No. The idea here is to not only have your articles linking from different IP addresses but to have them linking from sites with a high page rank. That is what is the real kicker about it.

            Ok, I understand better now.

If all your sites are on the same C class IP, you'll still not be able to get as good results as using it the way it's been outlined (at least that's my understanding of it)

I reckon I might give this a go. No harm in trying. Guessing this isn't classed as Black Hat? I've heard of Link Wheels and never really thought about them. It seems a lot of people appear to be very positive about the idea.

If you vary your link structure, use occasional nofollow links, avoid reciprocal links, and avoid link loops, Google will not have a problem with this.

Ha! Ha! I'm glad you liked Chuck Norris tribute! Great idea to post progress here. If we can get five or six "proof of concept" cases documented here, then I think we might really be onto something. All the best!

If the sites are in the same broad niche, I'd definitely just use one account for each directory. The more articles you have on a subject, the more authority you'll gain as an expert. This will drive more organic traffic from the directories. Hope that helps!

Would you focus your efforts on building additional (but separate) link wheels for your money page, or would you build link wheels based around one (or many) of your existing articles in the original link wheel? (Does that make sense - essentially adding new tier(s) to the link wheel structure)

            Cheers
I'd focus on the money page for now. Eventually, I might build link wheels around some of the EZA articles.

Okay, I've got this all set up now. It is too early to report anything yet, but will let you know when I see something.

But I do have a couple questions if you have time Tim. Thank you.

    1. if we want to continue to promote the same site, does it make sense now to do the same thing with other keywords and just replicate the process on an on-going basis?

    2. as for the article directory accounts, should we be opening new accts every time we do this for another website or another keyword. Lastly, just my opinion on the question NWW asked - I don't think it has the same power if all the links come from your own sites. Unless your sites are old and have some ranking of their own, the links will not have the same value as the established article directories or other well-ranking sites.

Although it has me wondering: couldn't one achieve something similar using his websites? Ie: one has 30 websites, and on each website, he links to his 29 other websites. That's 29 backlinks for each website.

Thanks for sharing, this is great! I love pretty links, but this may be my favorite use for them yet! When I checked you were at the bottom of page 1. Have you used any other methods to get the page ranked?

I agree with you that the posting of the article may give you the powerful backlinks on the site. but of this you can also use other techniques such as forum posting, blog comments and other SEO techniques to get backlinks to your website.

Wow, this really is an excellent post. Thanks for the detailed walkthrough. Coincidentally I've just commissioned 7 articles, so now I know exactly how I'm going to use them!

Also, I'd be interested to know your opinions on next steps. Would you focus your efforts on building additional (but separate) link wheels for your money page, or would you build link wheels based around one (or many) of your existing articles in the original link wheel? (Does that make sense - essentially adding new tier(s) to the link wheel structure)

    Cheers

Hey culpetm, great thread, and I like the layout of your plan. I tend to get off track fairly easily and this is something that I can follow and check the boxes off as I go.

I do have a concern though. I happen to be in a couple of niches where you offer your free articles, so I went ahead and loaded 7 of them. Just for a double check, I took one of the articles and ran the text through plagerisma (dot) com, and came up with lists of places where each and every sentence was used throughout the net. While the combination I submitted in total was not found, each sentence was found hundreds of times, and the article was called a 0% unique article.

Is this not a concern for you?
Have you had any trouble with the article directories coming back and calling foul?

Anyone can chime in here - maybe I am overthinking this or it just doesn't matter.

    Thanks,
    Scott

      Hi Scott.
Yes, you can find individual sentences around the internet, but you'll never find a complete copy of an article. I think a much better test of uniqueness is copyscape.

In any case, Google seems to love these articles. They've been used to rank hundreds of websites. Not bad for a free service!

Thanks for the quick response. I looked at copyscape, but I thought the article had to be posted to my site. I will revisit that option.

My niche is rather seasonal, and there isn't hardly any searches for my keyword right now, but every year for the past few years there has been an increase in searches 'in-season'. If I can get the site to rank now, it will be ready for the season. The keywords in the article don't match up exactly with my target, but I think this will work out fine regardless.

Can this strategy be applied to existing articles on our websites and articles we already have published on EZine?

My concern is renaming the URL's to include the "-#". If we rename the URL's, that will render all the existing links we already have published to the pages obsolete, won't it?

Correct. But you can still employ this strategy for existing articles. In fact, since your articles are already published, there's no need to redirect any links (so there's no need for Pretty Links). Also, there's no need to rename any permalinks on your website either.

Simply go into the original articles (at EZA or GoArticles or wherever they are), and edit the resource boxes to point directly to the other articles. Follow this map to create a simple, but effective, link wheel:

Point Article 1 to your website and to Article 4
Point Article 2 to your website and to Article 1
Point Article 3 to your website and to Article 4
Point Article 4 to your website only
Point Article 5 to your website and to Article 3
Point Article 6 to your website and to Article 1

I tried something similar to this, got this error from EZA:

You can link to EzineArticles.com in your URL providing you are linking to an article in a series or you are linking to your EzineArticles Expert Bio page. Your link does not fall into either of these 2 categories and will need to be changed. Please make the necessary changes and resubmit for Editorial review.

              Thanks Tim,

But now the question becomes....is the strategy any more or less effective by going ahead and getting the articles published FIRST, and then linking them when they are all "live." Since this particular process doesn't require the use of Pretty Links, I'm wondering if isn't a better way to go?

In other words, would we get any more "link juice" out of it by doing it this way and cutting out the Pretty Links application?

You suggest using AssociateComment(dot)com directory. Since I'm unfamiliar with this one, how do you configure the "select rights & payment?"

"Have you published this content before?"

                Rights - What level? "Exclusive, Non-Exclusive, Display-Only"

                Payment - Upfront? Performance?

The second resource box links that we publish in the directories point to the other articles within THAT SAME directory, correct? In other words, we don't link one of our articles in Ezine to a similar article in GoArticles, correct?

A backlink from the same domain is generally not as valuable as a backlink from a different domain. So I would link to articles in other directories.

Actually I have the same question, and here was no answer for that.
This is a very good post, but a little bit complicated . I'm just wondering why not make things easier, accordingly to this strategy:

Point Article 1 to your website and to Article 4
Point Article 2 to your website and to Article 1
Point Article 3 to your website and to Article 4
Point Article 4 to your website only
Point Article 5 to your website and to Article 3
Point Article 6 to your website and to Article 1

Point Article 4 to your website only, so publish your article with link to your website, I suppose you already have website, wait for approval, when it's approved you already have 2 URLs, one websites another for your article nr.4.

so next step publish article 1 and 3 and point them to website and article 4, wait for approval:

Point Article 1 to your website and to Article 4
Point Article 3 to your website and to Article 4

After publish article 2, wait for approval:

Point Article 2 to your website and to Article 1

                now article 5:

Point Article 5 to your website and to Article 3

                and 6:

Point Article 6 to your website and to Article 1

You're done, no fancy stuff with "pretty links" and much easier, yes it'll be longer ( not 45 minutes), but then, those links will be more naturally build.

That's only my beginners humble opinion , if I'm missing something please don't hesitate and point that out.

And one more thing, this does not look like link wheel to me, articles 2,5 and 6 doesn't have an incoming link.

Hi, SommerS. Thanks for the comment.

I think your method would work just fine for the SERP benefits.

But there are three important advantages to the pretty links; these are the reasons I use them:

                  1. As you mentioned, the pretty link method is faster. No need to wait for article approval.

                  2. Some article directories don't like you linking to other article directories. Pretty links will allow you to get your article approved, then point your link to another article, bypassing this sticking point. However, if you are an avid follower of TOS, then you may not want to do this.

                  3. If your money site eventually stops making money and you want to promote a new, but related, money site, you can redirect your entire link wheel to the new money site in about 10 seconds by creating a new Pretty link (just redirect Link #1). No need to manually change the link in every article and resubmit for approval.

So, really it just depends on what you need. If you don't need those three advantages, then the traditional method will work just fine.

                  Take care!
                  -Tim

The only stupid question is the one not asked!

Its not blackhat. Its actually one of the most advanced seo methods that most seo companies use. But, I guess you could say in a sense it is some how blackhat since its against Google rule of "natural seo".

Very interesting! I missed this thread when it appeared. I have loads of articles out there already that are pointing to, say, my homepage plus a deep link, which is the usual way most people use article marketing I think. I wonder - maybe the reason your method is effective (I've yet to try it) is because Google favours pages which do not link to multiple pages on the same domain (which might be indicative of deliberate linking), whereas linking to two different domains gets more love, as SEOers are less likely to follow that pattern.

Thinking aloud, there are some blog networks out there that let you blast out, say, 30 spun articles to different sites in the network (no, not as high PR as the article sites, but you get more of them). You can also spin the links randomly, so say you are allowed to have two backlinks in your article, you could do two blasts - after the first blast, collect links to the pages where your articles got published (sometimes it takes some detective work because they don't reveal it!) and then do a second blast where one of your links is always fixed - to your domain/site you are promoting, and the second randomly linking to one of your previous articles (a network I use lets you list, say, a dozen links to rotate). Make sense?

That would achieve a similar effect - less PR but more links I may try it, nothing to lose really!

      Question for the masses...

In the example used, "time management quotes" , related anchor text is used for the second bio boxes: "motivational time management quotes", "effective time management strategies" etc.

This is relatively easy to do when all the articles are about "time management"

But say, for example, the anchor text for the first link is "golf swing". The articles we've posted are not necessarily about the"overall" golf swing, but rather certain aspects of it such as the slice, hook, longer drives, etc.

Would the anchor text for second links still be a variation of "golf swing", such as "better golf swing" or "golf swing tips"....even if the article content is more specific like fixing a slice?

      In other words:

Like this in the bio box:
      Link #1: "golf swing"
Link #2: "better golf swing" (even though the article only talks about fixing a golf slice.)
      --OR --

      Like this:
      Link #1: "golf swing"

Link #2: "fixing a golf slice"

        In other words:

Like this in the bio box:
        Link #1: "golf swing"
Link #2: "better golf swing" (even though the article only talks about fixing a golf slice.)
        --OR --

        Like this:
        Link #1: "golf swing"

Link #2: "fixing a golf slice"
I've experimented with both ideas, and as far as I can tell, there's not much difference in the results on the SERPs. That being said, I'd recommend sticking with option #2 because it looks more natural.

Hi at first glance looking at the technique it looks good. However when I see that you're ranking 8th in Google and some sites above yours only have 2 to 8 links i question this. Especially when you stated this should bring in about 30 high quality backlinks.
    Just my thoughts.

Yes, there are some webpages ahead of mine, but the pagerank of their top domains is PR3, PR4, PR5, PR4, PR5, and PR4. The PR for my top domain is PR0. Not bad for 45 minutes of work.

Also, just to clarify.... I didn't say this method would bring in "30 high quality backlinks." Here's what I said:
Additionally, this method will automatically create 5-30 automatic backlinks to each article (this will happen when you select 5-30 tags and categories when you submit each article for publication). Some of these backlinks may even have high PR with link juice that will pass through the two links in your article resource box to your website and to one of the other 6 articles.
This means that your 6 articles will each have up to 30 backlinks (created from article directory tag pages). Your money page will still only have 6 backlinks. But each of those 6 backlinks will have up to 30 of their own backlinks propping them up. This creates a pyramid of sorts... very powerful.

I sent a cheeky e-mail to Tim, asking for a few articles for a niche market I'm targeting. I didn't get a few - he sent me 1,000!

I've had a quick look at them and they are high quality .txt documents. All I need to do to them is optimise for SEO with H1 etc and they're good to go.

This makes a refreshing change to so many articles that often need a re-write!

    Thanks Tim, really great!

First up. Great and useful post.

Second Up. Your free articles are an excellent resource.

Third up, the free articles on your website aren't completely unique.
In a fit of laziness I submitted one verbatim to EZA and got the following response:

"Thank you for your submission to EzineArticles.com titled "[title removed]"
We would like to help you get this article approved but there is an issue which needs to be resolved first.
Your article does not adhere to the following Editorial Guideline: Section 1.b Your article contains content which is an exact match or substantially similar to material attributed to another author/source here:[link removed] .....[yada yada yada]"

I'm not complaining, it's my own foolish fault for not doing my own checks, just a warning to others to less negligent than I was.

        Hi Liam.
I'm glad you liked the post.

Sorry the article was rejected by EZA. First time I've heard of that happening. Frankly, I'm surprised, given the level of spyntax in the articles. We use 12,000 word unspun articles are written to create 500 word spun articles.

Here's how we do it. There are five versions of each paragraph, and every paragraph has five sentences in the code. When the articles are "spun," each paragraph is randomly picked (out of all five available paragraphs), and each sentence within the chosen paragraph is randomly picked (out of five available sentences).

So, there is a significant level of uniqueness... but as you pointed out, EZA may still catch one here and there.

Still, not bad for a free resource!

        All the best.

Hi Brandon. Here's the link to the video series where Vita Vee discusses this concept: Vita Vee's How to Make Money Online Forums (not an affiliate link)

It's a 23 part video series. I believe he discusses this linking concept in video 19. Vita Vee employs this concept with document sites (such as scribd and docstoc). I've modified Vita Vee's idea to be used with article directories. In any case, this is one of the best video series I've ever seen for building mini-websites, backlinking, and making money.

The only problem is, I'm pretty sure the video series is posted in a private forum. Last time I checked, that forum was reserved for subscribers to one of his products: The Leading Articles (not an affiliate link) But check the link anyway. Maybe it is public, now.

If it is still private, then you'll have to subscribe to The Leading Articles in order to get access to the video series.

Incidentally, I talked to Vita Vee last week, and he gave me a special access code for The Leading Articles. Send me a PM if you want the code.

For anyone else reading this thread, you can also send me a PM to get the code.

      Take care!

  • I just spent a while doing this method, I switched out a few of the article directories.. what I did was:

    1 - Go Articles
    2 - Hub Pages
    3 - Squidoo
    4 - EzineArticles
    5 - knol.google.com
    6 - InfoBarrel

I already had an article published on EzineArticles with one link back to my money site for this anchor text, so I don't have to wait for approval on that one.

Using these directories and web 2.0's for this method allowed me to have all of the articles live without needing to use Pretty Links (because I already had the ezine articles one published).

The only article that is waiting for approval is the one I posted on InfoBarrel, which will be published in a couple of days and the entire link wheel will be completed.

Thanks for this guide, I have never set up a link wheel like this before. I've only ever done 2 tiers. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of results I get with it.

I am also planning on blasting out a bunch of articles with Article Marketing Robot that all link to the articles in this link wheel. This will hopefully amplify the power of these links even more!

Now, post article #7 on YOUR website. This will create a placeholder webpage. The URL should be similar to the URL you’re promoting, but it should be appended with the “-7”. Here’s my example:
    askmymonkey(dot)com/time-management/time-management-quotes-7

Can I use a URL like this as a placeholder website: mydomain(dot) com/Crossbow-7-s/115.htm ? Crossbow is my keyword

If I have all the existing links, do I have to use pretty links to redirect? Or just skip the step? Thanks

Hi Jacob. Yes you can use any placeholder URL you want as long as it is an existing webpage. Regarding your second question, you do not have to use pretty links if your links already exist.

If you use 301 redirects you wont even have to put the articles on the same domain. That is if I am understanding your method properly? You could have these articles on anyone of your other domains with different ip's and it would be hard for big G to become any the wiser. Am I correct?

I'm pretty sure that EZA comment links are nofollow, but a few nofollow links is always a good thing. Plus if you pick an article with a lot of traffic then you'll get traffic from readers clicking through.

The 301 redirects don't make the method more powerful. They're just a convenient way to interlink articles without having to go back in and edit them as they're published and URLs are created.

GoArticles has a history of changing its policy quite frequently. Even so, nofollow links are part of a healthy backlinking plan as it looks more natural than 100% dofollow links.

Nobody talks about the new algoritm of Google but it very important if you use this technique because all the sites where are our backlinks are links Farms.
I don't think it matters too much really as long as your focus is on using these articles for LINKS to your money page as opposed to trying to get each individual article to rank itself. At least that's what I'm inclined to believe (hope?), and it seems to make sense to me.

      I hope that made sense.

    Hi culpetm,

Some great tips here..I was trying to follow them when I got stuck...What if I'm not trying to promote any webpage but the domain itself..Then would I need to post the 7th article on my website and point all the pretty links to it or would I need to point them to my domain itself..If so how do I create the pretty links?

    Looking forward to your response...

      Hi dhinair.
You can definitely use this method to promote your domain. Just follow the steps exactly as laid out. You do need a 7th article, but it doesn't have to be on your website. Frankly, it can be anything (except the webpage or domain you're promoting). It's just a temporary placeholder.

      Take care.

Hey Everyone. I've had quite a few requests lately via PM from website owners asking if I can be hired to employ this strategy for them, but I've got my hands full at the moment with new product launches.

    Hi,

I am a little confused with the 10th step..You have mentioned , For the first Pretty Link the targetted url shd be changed to the newly approved article no. 4 in your case its from the directory onlineweblibrary but you've again mentioned For Pretty Link ending in "-3" you will change the targeted URL with the actual URL of the newly approved article #4 (which is published on ArticleAlley).

Should both be replaced with article no. 4 or was that a typo..
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3538893].message }}

Hi dhinair. That was indeed a typo. "ArticleAlley" should have said "OnlineWebLibrary". I've made the correction in the main post in order to avoid further confusion.

In any case, yes you do replace both URLs with article no. 4.

Thanks for alerting me to the typo!

      Take care.

    Hey Tim

    Question about the re-directs.
It's a cool idea, but I wonder if having all of your re-direct links all coming from the same domain will have any adverse effects.
Especially if you are building a wider net of properties to link from. It's not very good camouflage.
    Thanks.

Link wheels service program creation is considered one of the best SEO strategies to help drive PR and SERP site classification. This service is based on the number of wins of authority linking the site to a wheel type or a particular technique of coasting. If you own an online business should understand that the link service creation of the wheel is very useful if each property is unique content as the article reports, pictures and streaming media on a consistent basis.

In addition, the Web 2.0 properties that are used are generally considered some of the most favorable of the major search engines like Google. With the creation of research strategies to optimize performance in the world of online marketing and SEO experts have changed radically. Here I have seen one more success story of Link wheel

Just curious and probably an obvious answer... it shouldn't matter if we use a NoFollow directory on Step 4, right? That's the step where we don't have a second link.

You definitely want a handful of NoFollow links. It looks more natural than 100% DoFollow links.

You should always have a few NoFollow links in your link wheels.

Thanks for posting this Tim. Its very nice of you.

For those concerned about using redirects form the same domain and worrying that it might create a problem latter on, you can use a few instant approval directories in the mix.

        Here is what I did:

        GoArticle(Instant- PR3)

        ArticleBlast (Instant- PR5)

SelfGrowth ( PR6) Not instant, but it gives you a url for the pending artcile, which will be the same when its approved and published. So, you can use the pending link to link to it from another directory)

ArticlesBase (Approves in a few hours- PR6)

SooperArticles (Approves in about 48 hours or so- PR5)

ArticleRich (Approves in about 48 hours or so- PR4)

GoArticle = Links to Your site + ArticleBlast

ArticleBlast= Links to Your site + SelfGrowth

SelfGrowth= Links to Your site + ArticlesBase

ArticlesBase= Links to Your site Only

ArticleRich= Links to Your site + GoArticle

SooperArticles= Links to Your site + ArticleRich

So, with this, you can either:

Use link redirect for 1 or 2 of them, better than having redirect fro all.
        Or
You can wait a few hours for 2 of them to get approved and then go back to other 2 sites and edit the artcile to link to the new approved articles on each sites.

I hope this will help to clear confusion for soe of you guys.

I just did this last night for a keyword (highly competitive) that I am on the first page (8), so, hopefully it can help bring it up a few levels. I'll be sure to report back.

Hi thanks for the great post!

I was looking at the linking structure and am a little new to link wheels. You said to use the following link structure:

Why wouldn't you or could you use something like

Article 1 goes to website and Article 2
Article 2 goes to website and Article 3
Article 3 goes to website and Article 4
Article 5 goes to website and Article 5
Article 6 goes to website only

I am just trying to understand your reasoning a bit more.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, David. You could definitely use a simpler link wheel, but many folks in the SEO community think that simple link wheels are too easy for the big G to identify as unnatural. That's why I use a fairly complicated one.

By the way it's not an exact formula. You can (and probably should) switch up the link structure. Just make sure you avoid reciprocal links.

      Take care!
      -Tim

Why wouldn't you or could you use something like

Article 1 goes to website and Article 2
Article 2 goes to website and Article 3
Article 3 goes to website and Article 4
Article 5 goes to website and Article 5
Article 6 goes to website only

I am just trying to understand your reasoning a bit more.

      Thanks in advance!

This seems to be a sort of creating a wheel of links and is termed as link wheeling, surely through this you can make a great deal for the keywords of your website....

I believe it is a great idea, the only hard part for some is to get the link in the author resource box to point to the other page; no big deal, other than that, all it is an article prism with a link wheel component to it.

Digging this up but I think it's pretty good so I'm going to give it a try. I wondered if there were any updates to this?

I have an authority site that I put up a section for affiliate marketing that I want to try this on. Currently it's on page 3 of Google with local searches of 4,400 and 9,300,000 results for this keyword

I plan on using spun articles for all others except for Ezine because they've busting me pretty consistently for them.

Nice tips, link wheels are still a nice way to get some rankings, although not as powerful as they first were

Thanks for the idea Tim, and I agree with you that varying the structure will avoid the penalties which many people have said now result from using obvious link-wheels.

    thanks !

Gotta be careful with the link wheels as its clear manipulations. There are many other better SEO strategies/approaches to higher rankings compared to link wheels..

Hey everyone. Thanks for the comments. I just checked and it looks like the test webpage is now on the third page of Google. So after one year, the page still has some value in the SERPs.

What is the monthly local searches for this term?
why would third page of Google mean any traffic on anything other than a HUGEly searched term with 100s of thousands of monthly searches

Hey outwest. Thanks for the comment.

To answer your question, "Time Management Quotes" gets 2900 Exact Match Global searches a month in Google. It's not a super-lucrative KW phrase, and 2900 is not much volume either. So you're right: third page means nothing in terms of traffic or revenue. All I'm saying is that Google still values the webpage enough to place it in the top 30 results.

The point of the experiment was to see how high I could rank with only six backlinks, and to see how long the ranking would last.

It has now been one year since I did the experiment. The results: The webpage was on the 1st page of Google for 8 months. And it is now on the 3rd page of Google (after one year).

I'm sure another round of backlinking would get the page back to the first page of Google, but I don't want to mess up the experiment. I just want to see how long until Google drops the page altogether.
