Domain name keyword question

Hello I am about to register my first domain (for the sake of internet marketing anyway!) Looking forward to getting this going!

Ofcourse for my own benefits I am looking for an exact match keyword. There is another site that has the exact match keyword I am going for, but they are definately weak competition.

What are your experiences with using a broader match of the those same keywords used in the exact match by your weak competition?

Have you noticed any sizeable affects of using the broader term "the best common food recipes" over the exact term which IS taken in this example "common food recipes"?

*Edit - Also what about putting 'the' infront of the exact match phrase? I know google thinks nothing of that word but that is my thoughts exactly if you get my drift.

Thanks, looking forward to hearing what the forum has to say as usual

Regards,
Ross.

Good question, Ross. It's great that you're doing your due diligence on this.

I've heard the "gurus" say all kinds of stuff about this. Personally, I wouldn't settle for a broad or phrase match domain. I would just do some more keyword research. For about 5 of my sites I didn't get an exact match domain and I regretted it. Only 1 one of those sites really did well at all in Google.

On the other hand, if you know your SEO and can build plenty of good backlinks, I think you can still succeed with a broad match domain, such as one with the word "the". I've really only heard one guru say you should never settle for anything less than exact. Others will say you can use the word "the" or add a suffix (for some reason that particular guru say that a suffix is okay while a prefix is not).

I'm still a bit new with this so I hope that helped. Best of luck to you, sir.

P.S. commonfoodrecipes com looks available. I just checked two sources.

As long as the keyword you're trying to rank for is in the domain you should be ok.

Only use .com, from my personal experience, and avoid hyphens. You will hear all kinds of suggestions about this subject, but the criteria I've mentioned is sound.

Your domain name is only one piece of the larger puzzle, so don't focus too much on getting it perfect, just buy it and start building.

      Hope this helps.

I would avoid adding “the” at the front of any web name (type “the” in Google and see how many results come up).

For Long tail keyword website names I’d be looking at terms such as “best, cheap, cheapest, review of” as people either want the best product or the cheapest one and search accordingly.

It's really all about personal preference. If you have the, best, top, xl, first, my or any other additional words in there it won't really matter. Feel free to toss in some hyphens, or never ever use them...either method works.

Keyword rich domain names are nice because they require "less" backlinks. But I've found non-exact match domains get ranked just as easy.

I do myself buy exact match domains, and I don't care if I have to have in some additional wording. Sometimes I think it even helps the url/site look more professional in the eyes of the reader.

Thanks for all the information everyone, I think I will go with my gut feeling on this and just see the results, I know the exact match has more chance of being effective but I do plan on having some good SEO and backlinks there.

P.S Danny The food thing was only an example, but interesting that it's available, I thought that might have been snatched up. I don't know the first thing about cooking or food! But then again I guess if you do it right you don't always need to what so ever

I'm just looking forward to starting my first internet marketing project in a few days. I am determined to make some money and I've put many hours in researching and also trying to come up with my own methods and techniques.

            Regards,
            Ross.

here is a little tip if your keyword domain is taken; try to get a domain with the city name and in; such as incincinnati.com
then if you want to rank in a directory for your business at the top
you have to create a subdirectory and call it the domain you want
as Plumbers.incincinnati.com; this works in directories.

Even though domain name is only a little factor on your SEO, if you can get the exact match domain, go for it. Any help is good.
But don't get obsessed with domain names.
