#1 On the first page of Google without Backlinks??

Hi guys, I was just using a Backlink checking tool.

I'm in the process of building backlinks to my site, I started today.

Out of curiosity, I checked the backlinks for my competitors on page 1 of Google.

What baffled me is that, out of the first 5 results I checked, only 1 of them had any backlinks (about 90)

Is this possible or is there something wrong with the tool I'm using?

I figued that due to the low competition the sites that had ranked, (Ones like UKTV.food) were ranked at the top because they're well known?

If anyone could clear this up for me it'd be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Google never shows the full extent of back links to the public, because they don't want you figuring out how your competitor got ranked and going out and getting links on all the same sites.

It also happens sometimes where a niche is so uncompetitive that there are no back links for any site in the search results. In the absence of back links, Google must rely on on-page content.

It is also possible that they got the backlinks recently, and backlink checking sites don't have access to them yet - I know my website has some backlinks that haven't been detected yet because they are new.

The SEO tools are using the Google API.

If the link is in Google's database, then the SEO tools should be able to see them.

But if Google has yet to detect a link, they will not be using that link to determine how a website ranks in Google, will they?
