Backlink question

I understand exactly what a backlinkis as i know that it links back to your page, but what i dont get is how when you pay people to create them, the operation of this.

My question is when people say they have 1000 backlinks, what does this actually mean?

    It means that somewhere on the internet 1000 different pages are linking to that page they have.

      Yes it means there are 1000 links pointing back to your site. What is important to remember is that you don't need 1000 links to outrank your competitors. Luckily Google value links from quality websites more than links from poor websites. So all you have to do is get links from websites that have a high page rank (I go for page ranks of 4 and above). If you have 50 links from page rank 4 pages, this will be better than 1000 links from page rank 0 pages.

        Backlinks help your page rank highly in google.

        if a page about training your dog links to your website selling tips for training your dog, google loves that, and sees you as relevant.

        The more closely related the two sites linking to each other are, the better you'll do.

    Agree with bingo123, it's much better for your site if you are linking to high PR site's than having 1000's of backlinks on site's with PR 0

    If you are asking how people sell 1000 backlinks to you, they create (usually black hat) 1000 links that all point to a page of your choosing, with your anchor text.

    Normally these links are very low quality and have little SEO benefit.
