Starting out with AdSense

I'm very familiar with Google services such as AdWords, Analytics, WebMaster Tools etc but I've never used AdSense - when I have my personal website up and running I'm thinking of implementing it as my website (will hopefully) be bringing in a lot of traffic after it's been optimised well etc.
Does anyone have any major tips I should take in or any beneficial tips I could bare in mind when I start?
Also, do you have the option of image ads and text ads?
