http and www indexing

I notice that (h t t p :// example.com) is indexed more than (h t t p :// w w w . example .com) in my three sites by the main 3 search engines. but the back linking is for the h t t p : // w w w ... . Can anyone tell me why is this. and how can i make the search engines index only h t t p : // w w w.... instead
of h t t p :// ......

    You need to set up a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file, just google that and do it!

    To test it out, just go to the http:// and it should redirect to http://www.

      In terms of SEO you need to make sure the search engines are only indexing one version of your pages to avoid a duplicate content penalty.

      Like the guy said above, just Google it: "non-www to www" or vice versa.

        There is no duplicate content penalty.

        You don't have to choose.

        If you keep making your backlinks with one version, that's the one google
        will choose.

        If you don't, then google will choose whichever one it likes better.

        To be 100% sure that the non-www and the www version both work, it
        is indeed best to use a 301 redirect, if you are relying on type-in traffic.

        If they both work now for your main index page, you don't have to really worry.

    Agreed It doesn't matter with the non www and the www. Like others said its better to use 301 redirect to your site.
