Google #1 Spot Traffic Estimates?

Okay, I have a handful of questions about Google Keyword Tool and #1 Rankings.

When estimating the traffic you will get from the #1 position in Google...

1. Do you use the broad search number or the exact search number?

2. Do you use the Global monthly searches or the local monthly searches?

3. What percentage of the traffic can you expect to get if you are ranked #1 in Google for a particular keyword?

4. Does the amount of searches that appears in the Google Keyword Tool include Yahoo, Bing, and other search engines or only Google?

Thanks in Advance for anyone who can help me with this.

    1 - always exact
2 - global since my sales arent limited to just US
3 - search forum and you'll see variety of numbers in many posts about this (my guess is average of 60-70% but that's just going from memory)
    4 - just google

    Always use exact

Depends on your target market. If you sell exclusively to those in your country, the only thing that matters is the local searches.

    3. What percentage of the traffic can you expect to get if you are ranked #1 in Google for a particular keyword?

I have heard anywhere from 50-65% but it's also based on how well your page title and description is written. If you have a mediocre title/description, you will get fewer clicks.

    4. Does the amount of searches that appears in the Google Keyword Tool include Yahoo, Bing, and other search engines or only Google?

    Google only

Thanks in Advance for anyone who can help me with this.

The other posters are correct on numbers 1, 2, and 4.

Obviously the answer to #3 is not completely known, but to contribute what I have heard and read, it is about 50%.

It is better to use Exact Match for an estimate.

    Why?

Because broad match may include a lot of other irrelevant keywords that was just incidentally matched together with your keyword, which actually means something else.

Example: If you are actually trying to estimate the number of results for "Potty Training"

And if you chose the Broad Match, keywords which might be irrelevant to you like:
    baby potty training
    dog potty training
    washing potty training
    potty training pants

...would be included as the estimates also.

    2. Are you going to be targeting everyone or only in the US?
If you are trying to rank for "Lasik surgery in California", it's better to look at the local monthly searches.

If you're trying to rank for "how to be more confident", it's safe to look at the global monthly searches, because it's a global market.

    3. According to studies done, around 30-50% would click on the first result.

    4. No. Wordstream has a Bing Keyword Tool.

      1. Do you use the broad search number or the exact search number?

I use Exact and Phrase to get a better idea.

      2. Do you use the Global monthly searches or the local monthly searches?

LOCAL is US Only (it's country specific depending where you're searching and language) - Global is... Global. It depends on your product and/or type of site you are buidling. I always look at LOCAL b/c I'm looking at Google.com traffic, not Russia or Japan or China or Italy or France etc...

      3. What percentage of the traffic can you expect to get if you are ranked #1 in Google for a particular keyword?

@TylerF: Very nice image I was going to post something semi-similar. Unfortunately, there is NOT an exact answer to this question, but you get the picture between his picture and the below posting:

      #1 - 42%
      #2 - 12%
      #3 - 8%
      #4 - 6%
      #5 - 5%
      #6 - 4%
      #7 - 3%
      #8 - 3%
      #9 - 3%
      #10 - 3%

      4. Does the amount of searches that appears in the Google Keyword Tool include Yahoo, Bing, and other search engines or only Google?

It's the Google Adwords Keyword Tool... So of course it's only Google statistics!
