Dropped Domains And SEO

Hey guys,
Searched around the forum for this, but couldn't really find anything. I've not had much experience with aged domains, but I'm starting to tinker with the a little to see how they can help with rankings.
Not sure if anyone has had any experiences with this or not, but if a domain has age, let's say for example 3 years and it drops because someone doesn't want it anymore, also it drops from the Google index. Does it still have weight or is it sort of reset?
