Does anyone have any suggestions for getting backlinks to a site?

Article Marketing has always worked best for me.

And if you do it right, you can get direct traffic from the article as well as back links.

You shouldn't focus all your efforts on back links. When getting back links, just ask yourself a basic question, will this link bring me traffic? If not, then why have it?

I have found over the years that writing Articles with Original Content and posting them to say Ezinearticles, or goarticles.com works great for driving traffic and also providing backlinks. I have used this method for years and it works. Just be sure your articles are original articles. Hope this helps

You can use common methods like directory submission, Article submission, Social Bookmarking and Blog commenting.

You can also subscribe to packages that provide backlinks.

The best way to get backlinks is those three methods.

Other advanced things can be done such as;
Installing Blogs for people with links to your site.
Creating free wordpress themes with your link on them.

My experience of success for my site is i have gain some major benefits from posting unique content in site, Article posting with major targeted keywords, forum posting, blog posting, comment posting, social bookmarking, directory submissions, but do not forget social media to take advantage of promoting your products or services

If you want to have more backlink in an instance try BMD and Scrapebox, but you can do so manually try blog commenting, forum posting, directory submissions and blog and article submission.

  Blog commenting
  Social Bookmarks
  Link-Wheel
  Directory Submissions.

  These are all great methods for getting backlinks and most I have heard before, but how do you know if the backlink is quality, and how can one determine the number of backlinks the site has? I am writing articles daily, but not necessarily seeing a spike in traffic.

Many kinds, depending on which you prefer. But this time I am going through the articlesubmission, where you are required to write articles and will be posted in several articledirectories, with this we would expect one way backlinks.

Articles are great for backlinks. But yes, you should only have backlinks that a relative your project. That way it give maximum effieciency. Why thing not to do, is spam backlinks for your site. Google knows this, and you'll get a Very bad ranking. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

  One sneaky way I've noticed (thanks to Yahoo! Site Explorer) people are creating backlinks is that they are creating other sites that guarantees they will have lots of posts, and then they put the site they want to rank for as part of the blog roll.
  
  For example, creating a site for misremembered quotes, then putting the url for their yard ornaments site in the blog roll.
