No it is not true.

Google will always care about links.

The only thing that has ever changed in that regard is that they currently ignore links that they perceive to have no value.

On page SEO amounts to only about 15% of factors which Google considers. Links are still king and links from high PR are still better. So are links from .edu.

Yes it does help sometimes.

When some one accidentally surfing on the internet and he captures his interest the way you write a comment and has a backlink to your site.

That would be a big plus.

At this point in time backlinks still play a big part in the SERPS. It would be crazy if it was only about on-page SEO because a good deal of sites (at least the ones that knew what they were doing) would be very similar so it would be hard to distinguish what should be ranked higher.

First off - which SE's are you talking about?

In my experience, like the other people on this forum have said, Google ALWAYS favor backlinks over content. I own hundreds of sites ranked Number 1 for search terms with >1000 exact searches a month and between 100,000 - 250,000 exact match competing pages with nothing more than a few posts.

In fact, I can honestly say some of them don't "deserve" to be there, it's just that I have more links than my competitors from higher quality sites. And I'm not complaining!

You need backlinks to rank better in google. quality backlinks. Onsite SEO is just a small portion of the whole process.
But all in all Google still use backlinks in their ranking algorithm.

You definitely still need backlinks. Onpage factors may mean that you need less of them to rank, but you definitely still need them.

There will always be people saying is not working. Is like if it's not working
for them, it doesn't exist lol. The key with Backlinks is to get them indexed.

High PR sites mean nothing unless your links get indexed.

I think backlinks are the vital elements in the eyes of Google. But of course the quality and high page ranked backlinks. Quality Backlinks pushes your site towards high PR. On page optimization is an important part of generating traffic and also making good links. So I don't think that backlinks are ignorable.

Its not possible.to give a traffic to your site you will have to give a strong backlinks.just on page optimizing will never help you in bringing large traffic.

You might not see the results immediately, but if you monitor the views and clicks through Google Webmaster Tools, I'm sure you'll notice the difference backlinks make.

I have seen people rank with 0 back links. Not the norm though.

But yes, back links are very important. Whether the search engines gave credit or not, they are still a major key for traffic. BUT THEY DO COUNT TOWARDS RANK! So tell your friend or whoever, to.... nevermind I might get banned for that

There are keywords with no or low competition for which just on-page optimization is enough to rank well. But without linkbuilding is impossible to get a higher position for keywords with some competition.

When you think about it from a conceptual standpoint, backlinks *have* to be an important factor. The original reason why google put emphasis on backlinks in the first place was that it (google) felt that if a lot of people were linking back to a particular site/page, that must mean that it had good content, was useful or popular, etc.

Now, we know that's not always the case now, as us IMers build backlinks like mofos artificially.

But for google to discount backlinks all together, they would (in essence) be saying that it didn't matter why anybody ever posted a link to a site, and would throw the original idea of why backlinks were important in the first place out the window.

Absolutely. Plus, backlinks are one of the few factors that is not completely controlled by the website owner.

Backlinks will always matter, the only thing that will change is how search engine value each type of link.

No, the back links are important for Google. If you get good do follow back link from other resource then your link will be crawled by Google which helps your ranking.

Backlinks in general are very important since they are the only way to track popularity. How would they know if a site is hot if nobody talks about it.

This is where diversity comes into play. They can track spam if all the links are from one kind (profiles, articles, videos) only

I don't think google can judge only by on page matter which site to rank first in page and which site to rank last.So backlinks is the main factors which determine the position of your site for specific keyword.
yes now google don't count the links that are irrelevant to the content and the link present in sidebar and comment sections.

No no no no no, you need the following:

h1 tag
h2 tag
and h3 if possible
3-6% keyword density.
alt image tags help
a link to an external source

And as many backlinks as you can get pointing towards your site!
