How much does a domain name matter?

I have a domain name semi-related to the primary keywords and the web site is live and bringing traffic - however i also have a better domain name with no web site on it yet.

Am i better off moving the content to the new domain name and just redirecting the old web site to the new? Will it make that much difference to my rankings etc? Also, will moving the content have any negative effects that i'm unaware of?

I wouldn't have it redirect; the SEO value comes from the domain itself, so you would essentially be starting over, promoting both of the sites.. if you haven't built up the old site much yet (with backlinks, SEO, etc) then just transfer the content over.. if you have built it up, don't worry about it. It won't make that big of a difference. I say do something different with the other site or resell it if it's a really profitable domain name.

The website which has keyword in your domain is better then the other one.
Simple example is that if you give 10 links to a site that do not have keyword in its domain will boost to 5 rank up and if the same links will be given to a domain which already has keyword with in the domain will boost to 20 ranks up.

I would build a new site on the better domain, and make sure you have strong links from the old, to the new.

This way you keep what you already have, and expand, with the new site.

I guess icanhascheezburger.com better go for a better domain.
Being #1 for funny cat pictures is just not good enough.

Like the 2nd person said, concentrate on stuff that actually matters in
the long run. No reason to toss the site out. Do you think warriorforum.com
should get a better domain? Hmmmm. Think about that one, then you have
        your answer.

Thanks for the feedback. What concerned me most was if a competitor was to use a better domain and we are competing, would he rank higher just because of the domain name score.

If the difference between 1st place clicks and second place clicks really is 30% like i've read elsewhere, then i'm making a bad business decision growing an inferior domain name (same content) than one with a targeted domain name.

The name may give a slight edge if everything else were equal. There are so many variables that factor in to it. I've seen sites that didn't even have the keyword in the domain name rank #1 for the niche.

How many other forums do you think are trying to compete with the
warrior forum? And what's their domains? Digitalpoint is their biggest
competitor, and you notice how digitalpoint should change their
domain as well? Think that's going to happen? Should digitalpoint
      change their domain as well?
