A comment is just a message you post on someone's site.

So yes, if you post a comment on a blog that has a keyword in the name and a link in the URL box that keyword becomes a backlink. Hence why you see people whose names show up as odd things like Oral-B Toothbrush :rolleyes:

A backlink can come from a many different places - a comment, an article, a blog post etc.

Backlinks aren't created equal. To be of use to you (from an SEO perspective, not just traffic perspective) they have to be what is called 'Do follow' which means that Google will pass some of its ranking down to the page that the link goes to.

Re a 'Plan' it depends on your site but here's mine for my blog

Step 1 : Research and pick strong 5 'action' or 'buyer' keywords
By 'action' or buyer keywords I mean words that show people are ready to take action eg: Product XX review

Step 2: Write an amazing blog post for each keyword (the kind that makes people want to bookmark it or link to it naturally - this is what is referred to as link bait) using correct on page SEO (see my blog post for my checklist). I call these 'pillar posts'

Step 3: Write 5-10 articles for each 'pillar post'

NB: This list is a bit longer than I usually do. It comes from Joseph's '40 days' warrior forum post. These are the kind of gems he drops in there

(Re your comment of how many keywords should be in an article you submit, this will depend on the article directory's particular policy. EzineArticles.com allows two 'self serving' links in your bio box ie: two links that benefit YOU)

Step 4 - Bookmark these articles using IMAutomator.com (another Joseph gem) and manually submit to ones not included in IMAutomator eg: Digg, Mixx, Reddit etc. This gives you backlinks into the ARTICLES which then gives your pillar post a ranking boost.

Step 5 - Check rankings and boost backlinks with other sources if required: PR release, social bookmarking and commenting on do follow blogs.

SEO is something that you do need to be reasonably patient with. Joseph's thread explains in a lot of detail why you need to take it slowly .. well relative to doing something like Pay Per Click where the traffic is instant.

My first thought was that you should pay somebody to do it.

But then I sat down and thought for sec about it. I have never paid anybody to do something online for me that I haven't done atleast once or twice to get a feeling for how long it should take and what ind of results that it given me in SERPS.

What I did starting out was get a basic course I think I looked at something like backlin blueprint and did a mindmap at the same time as I watched it, I also only did one video/type of link per day. Then did I dedicate that day/days to understand how to create it.

After I knew all the different types then the hustle starts.

It doesnt matter what anybody says the know when it comes to SEO because its all theory, we all have slightly different ways of looking at it as well. Me I rank a ton with spam and will keep on doing so because I "think" it works.

But whatever floats you boat.

What Im trying to say is you have to keep hustling until you find your way.

I'm pretty new at this too but I've learned a couple things that might be helpful to you. I've noticed some people recommending outsourcing (of which I'm absolutely a fan) First of all- you have to know what your doing before you outsource you work...This is important because you need to know what is important, whether or not your outsourcers are doing whats important or just pulling the wool over you. Once you understand what needs to be done, you'll have metrics by which to measure your outsourcing.

Also, you asked about the difference between a backlink and a comment...

A backlink is any link that points to your site - same as "inbound link"
A comment can also link to your site, but won't always 'count as a link' for your SEO. This is because of a little tag in the coding of the link called a "nofollow" label. These links tell Spiders/crawlers/bots not to count it toward your backlinks. This is probably why you might be commenting and trying to build your backlinks, but seeing no results from it.

It is important to focus on backlinks in your SEO, but before you do that you want to make sure your on-page SEO is perfect (otherwise your doing a bunch of work or spending money for other people to do the work for you for no real reason). There's an awesome resource out there by Daniel Tan called SEOPressor (he's a war-room member and has been doing SEO for a long time).

I recommend his stuff- its helped out tremendously with my personal SEO and he actually helped me launch my own SEO business. If you are interested in learning more, PM me.

Learning is a process an not an instant thing. The best thing to do is to continue what you are doing and study also new strategies.

It would be better if you focus on quality on links not on the quantity.

You deal with things keyword by keyword, url by url. Ranking get more competitive every day...

I am very much a SEO amateur (i'm more of a coder) but have been able to get a #4 ranking in google for a very competitive term related to IM through focusing on link quality not quantity. Don't forget DMOZ, that alone made me jump from page 2 to 1!

Great idea about setting up Google Alerts.

I don't think you should worry about limiting backlinks
but more keeping it consistent over time is the ideal goal.

Lets say you build 5 backlinks today, and 100 tomorrow,
then you stop for two weeks or more, you'll probably not
see much improvements on your overall rankings.

Just need to keep it pretty consistent. I don't know how
old or new your website is. Overall, I think you are on the
right track, but keep in mind, you have to keep a clear goal
and stick to it. Start by working on ranking for 1 keyword
then move into more as you go.

Build backlinks like you said and do some blog commenting.
