I think its amusing to read all those threads about supposedly "new" Google algorithms which will shatter the search engine world, de-rank everyone etc..etc...

Because Google is so "sophisticated" in its ranking algorithms that i see EMPTY(!) sites which solely consist of "exact keyword domain name" ranking #1 for whatever search term.

Some of those sites are literally "empty" and just point to the "index.of" directory.

Google can be fooled so easily that by purchasing an exact name-keyword domain you are basically almost guaranteed ranking, no matter how crappy your site is...

how old are these sites "one page" sites? I've seen old crappy sites hold their ranking even after some algorithm changes. The ranking updates seem to make it harder for new sites

    Interesting topic.

The challenge is this: They can't have human beings editing everything, so they have to rely on voting systems and SOCIAL PROOF.

No, their new FACTORS (it's just a couple of factors) will not ruin rank and traditional ways of doing SEO, we'll just have to get a bit smarter.

    Here's an MP3 I did about this: http://imarketinghacked.com/imblog/a...ocial_rank.mp3

It's just another factor. If people are retweeting your stuff, and you have a "genuine buzz," you'll rank better.

I don't think it means your rank will drastically decrease because you've achieved rank through other methods.

Ultimately, Google will always lean toward "quality ranking!"

But normally not for real people doing real searches for real keywords.

Right now one of the top searches is broadband.
You won't find a crappy one page site in the bunch. I actually get
broadband.info as #10 which is not a one page crappy site.

Reminds of some chap coming here a while back saying he had dirtysmoke.com
and now ranks #1 for dirty smoke. I mean get real. Strange thing, nothing
worked out for him and the site got taken over by a porn site real quick. The
site, dirtysmoke.com, does not rank anymore for dirty smoke. Go figure.

Agreed 100%. People get pretty paranoid about Google and what they do, and thus believe some pretty crazy things, but the truth is that Google is still pretty much a blind elephant.

The fact that we still see crap sites popping up in the first spot based on their domain name really is proof of this - sure, there are keywords in which the sites are full of content and SEO'd to the hilt, but it was the competition that made all that SEO necessary, not Google. The truth is that Google's algorithm hasn't changed so much that the world of SEO has been turned on its head.

    Nice post, thanks!

I noticed most of the Google paranoid threads start in the main forums, then they get moved here (seo forum).

Most folks that are into seo here on WF, start by posting an seo thread in the seo forum, not the main WF forum.

You can tell they've been moved simply by looking at the first few members in the thread, the guys that would never post in the seo forum.

My point is, they read some guys blog post & believe everything they read, because they don't have a clue how seo works & never do hands on & their own testing (just read blog post).

BTW, the Google paranoid threads brings out everyone & their brother swearing Google just now came after them & their sites.

Always the lazy guys swearing Google penalized me, what did I do wrong (lol).

The answer is the only thing they did wrong was assume that seo is personal, which it's not, Google & the rest of the world could care less If their sites exist or not...

Rank your sites or go home!

    [tired of hearing about it!]

The algorithm can never be perfect, and when it gets close to perfect it stays the same for a longer period of time, giving the black-hat SEO's time to study it and beat it. Spam on Google has come and will continue to come in waves because of this relationship.

I think the answer is, once again, in diversifying. If you're site loses it's ranking because of EMDs being devalued, why is that the only SEO you knew how to do
