How long should a domain name be? I have seen an exact match domain name in the credit cards niche that is 31 characters long, get 3,500 searches (exact) a month and it's already in Google's index and it's available for registration. Should I register this domain name? Please share you thoughts on this.

If you see other compititors that rank well for such a long EMD. Then why not go for it?

It depends. Who are you attempting to reach with the domain name?

Users? Absolutely not. However you can create a shorter domain name and redirect it to the longer one. Generally speaking this is not the wisest strategy with search engines but they don't mind it as long as you don't abuse it.

Search Engines? Absolutely. Search engines are looking for keyword phrases within your domain name and really don't care how long it is for the most part.

For example, I have a Website called AcousticGuitarTuning.org which is a WordPress domain I recently created using Blog BluePrint [excellent tool].

This domain name is designed with 3 keywords in mind.

    Acoustic Guitar
    Guitar Tuning

    And, of course...

    Acoustic Guitar Tuning

Not to mention all the other combination's of words within the URL. The more words you have which target your niche within your domain name the greater your power.
