Backlinks jumping in and out of index?

Is it normal when you build backlinks for them to jump in and out of the index?
I am searching for a unique phrase that was left behind in the author box of spun articles that were submitted. I have not done any pinging of the articles or anything else to get them indexed.
This morning I showed 48 pages when searching for that unique phrase. It rose to 56 a couple hours later and then this afternoon I noticed that it only had 2 results returned...
I was definitely confused at that point and wondered if they had for some reason been deleted from the index but had no idea why.
It later rose to 28 and then this evening I noticed that it had jumped to 80. But this was not just new articles being indexed, they were the same ones(or at least a lot of them were).
So that made me feel pretty good again, but tonight I was getting ready to go to bed and tried one more time and saw it back at 24.
Is this normal? Is it preventable? Anyone know what is causing it?
