Question About Ranking Exact Search Term Domain Names

Hi,

If you have an exact keyword domain name....

Example:ExactSearchTerm.com

How difficult can it be to out rank a very large competitor that has hundreds or even thousands of links pointing to their websites domain but has no links pointing to the Exact Search Term?

Example:
I have noticed some very large real estate websites (like realestate.com & trulia.com) have thousands of links pointing to their main domain name but very few, (or even no) links pointing to many of their inner pages that are showing up in the search engines for exact search terms.

If I own an exact search term domain name and optimize my web site for that term can I place higher in the search engines for that search term than the larger web sites do?

I would appreciate any thoughts you may have here.

Exact match domain names help if all else is equal. They don't make up for links.

    Yes, you definitely can.
Keep in mind though that it will take longer to outrank sites that have held their position for a long time. So even if a site with almost no links to the particular page has been sitting on top of google for years for that term, it might take a while until you outrank it.

It does help but i dont think it really matters I have beaten many search terms domains in my time so it plays a part but not a big one.
