One of my websites just started ranking between pages 3-5 on google for certain keywords.

Should I leave my page be or should I continue to play around with my keywords to see if I can get the first page?

Okay, I wouldn't mess around with your on page stuff. (since it's working for you)

Since you're already ranked on keywords but not yet on Page 1.
and your positions are jumpy, that would mean you need to show
off that you're the site that should be ranked on that keyword...

Basically, build authority around the main keyword phrase.

    My suggestion?
Build backlinks and setup social bookmarks to your pages.
Just build like 5-10 links a day, and you should hold onto
your rankings and most likely improve to keep it stable.

    Google WonderWheel -- Use this!
Create articles based on the results from your main keyword on Google Wonderwheel.

Search the keyword and click wonderwheel on the left.
You'll get keywords relevant to your main keyword and start
building blog posts or articles on your site based on those phrases.

Just focus on building backlinks, but not just to the main page but to interior pages as well. Look at the #1 site that is beating you in yahoo site explorer, see where they are getting their backlinks from.

I've been building links too but would you mind explaining how do you build links for your inner pages? Step by step would be great.

Yes, build backlinks by all means, but you do need to check your site a time or two per week. Don't be afraid to tweak it in small ways if needed. Remember, SEO is a process, not an event. To me, it's like gardening. The flowers may be pretty, but I still hoe, trim and watch out for bugs eating them!

Building backlinks to your inner pages is exactly the same as building to your home page. For example, instead of adding your homepage as your link - http://www.yourdomain.com, use your inner links - http://www.yourdomain.com/birdwatching.html (obviously use the keywords for each link as anchors). Just be sure to keep your link structure the same, i.e. use http://www.yourdomain.com all the time, not http://yourdomain.com & the other one at different times. It has been stated that Google sees these as 2 separate pages, diluting your link building.

Does this means that you are targetting the same keywords in the anchor text by using a inner pages of your site?

What if i want to rank my site for other keywords? Does this means i just have to rinse and repeat what i have been doing for my main keywords on my secondary keywords?

Typically, you want to have each page targeting a different keyword. Say your site is on dog training. Your home page could be on how to stop aggression, so you'd use that url & those keywords as the anchor text. Next, you could have an inner page on how to stop digging - so you'd use that url & that keyword, e.g. http://www.yourdomain.com/how-to-stop-digging.html with "how to stop digging" as your anchor text.

You should definitely target different keywords for each url you have. Try to use your keywords as part of the url (as above) and as the heading of your page if possible. Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers,

You should build more quality links to push your site to the 1st page.

Web 2.0 properties can help boost your rank for cheap price.

But if you have a high budget then try link buying from related niche with your site that has high PR.(also check the PR if its not fake )
