The Google Dance?

Maybe one of the more knowledgeable SEO guys here can fill me in.

I've recently had some heavy backlinking done to URL of mine for a certain keyword and the result was my URL went from nowhere to be found on Google to the #8 spot, and it stayed there for about 1 day.

Next thing I know this morning it was at the #1 spot. Two hours later it was #9. Shortly after it was #1 again. Now, about 4 hours later it is at #10.

What is going on here? How can my URL be jumping around that much in one day?

UPDATE:

I just discovered something very strange. When I'm logged into my GMAIL account and run a search for my keyword it shows up at #10 on page one. When I am logged out and run the same search my URL shows up #1 on page one.

      I just discovered something very strange. When I'm logged into my GMAIL account and run a search for my keyword it shows up at #10 on page one. When I am logged out and run the same search my URL shows up #1 on page one.

      Does anyone have an explanation for this?

    Yes, there is an explanation for that. Google tries to personalize your results based on your search and browser history. So when you're logged into a Google account, it has a lot of history for you, so it tries to personalize. But even when you're not logged in, it tries to personalize based on your browser history.

    The best way I've found to objectively look at my site's ranking is to use an "incognito browser" in Google Chrome. Open Chrome, click the little tool button in the top right, and click "open new incognito window". This window will not have access to any information about you, thus giving you unbiased (unpersonalized) results.

    Yes. Being logged in can do very strange things to your searches, not least because your search history is probably stored in your google account. My advice: check your page rank while firmly logged out, preferably with a different browser/on a different computer.

    I find all other free services still take in account my IP and will even inflate results by listing sub pages that normally are not shown in the results.

    Google dance has something to do on the trending of Google searches. There is no deffinite time that Google dance occur. The period during the update is known as the Google dance.

    Fluctuation in the results is called "Google Dance". Suppose your keyword ranking on 2nd position but after few minute its jumped on 10th position in google results. This is "Google Dance".
