CPC question

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the CPC is for the search network, and Adsense is the content network?

If so, that would mean a substantially lower CPC for Adsense publishers?

Never thought about it before, but a thread in the main forum got me thinking maybe my research was flawed to begin with in the lower paying niches as the content network CPC is substantially less then the search network.

    If you are referring to the CPC estimates in Google's Keyword Tool, then yes, you are correct that those are for the search network. It doesn't mean that the search network will be cheaper but most advertisers find that's generally the case. By how much is another question.

    Also important to note that what an advertiser actually pays depends on his ad quality. The tool estimates based on a typical or average quality. Advertisers with higher quality can pay much less. It's rare that I pay the listed estimate (which is for the top positions by the way). I use the tool to give me an idea on how much to bid to get the top position. I've paid at times half or less the estimate, even in the first spot, simply because of a high quality ad.

      Yes I'm familiar with how QR and click thrus effects the price the advertiser is charged, thus the Adsense commission. But never really gave the content CPC much thought, those Adsense gurus seem to gloss over this.

        What do they say in general?

        I don't do the Adsense side of the equation. But it seems to me that anyone willing to put ads on their site should have a basic understanding of how it works for the advertisers because it affects their earnings. There's just too many questions in these forums asking why they are getting five cent clicks instead of the $1 the GKT is showing.

          Yeah that's just it. They suggest that to determine which words to target to use the CPC, they fail to mention or are unaware that it's for the search network and not the content network. All of a sudden those $2 and $3 keywords aren't quite as attractive.

    Do any of them mention how ads are ranked and cost calculated? Because ads are ranked taking quality into consideration, not just the bid, an ad bidding $1 can outrank one bidding $2 by having a higher quality. Google actually makes more money using this system.
