Hey guys

I got into a discussion about SEO, with another beginner SEO dude. And he was telling about how Flash isnt really good for SEO.

I thought, that even if we did use specific elements of Flash on a website, then couldnt we define in the ROBOTS.TXT file to ignore the flash related stuff?

Also we didnt really understand why flash is bad for SEO. the only thing we were coming up with is that probably the crawlers dont understand it and cant index it. Is that it?

The only other thing I can think of is...it could affect the load time of your website. Most of the major search engines are including load time in their ranking algorithms.

I agree with the load time factor, it is fairly new, but makes sense (anything common sense is in most SERP algoritms) and flash is most definitely going to add to load time of said website, although ignoring from the robots.txt file could be a good idea here because flash definitely correlates to sales in most situations, however, i dont know to much about robots.txt so i wouldnt say to do that for sure. definitely look into it

Yes I agreed on his points. Nowadays search engines considering load time as one of the factor in SERP rankings. So, it is better to avoid the flash content in your websites.

We currently do not attach content from external resources that are loaded by your Flash files. If your Flash file loads another file—such as an HTML file, an XML file, or another SWF file—we may index the contents of those files, but we won't consider that content to be part of the content in your Flash files.
We're currently unable to index the bidirectional language content (for example, Hebrew or Arabic) in Flash files.

You're hearing old news that since has been fixed. Only thing I'm unsure of is whether or not it does effect the load times. Not sure if the spiders can read the swf files without it being fully loaded or not.

Google, Yahoo and other major search engines have gotten much better at indexing flash sites. Not perfect, but better. There are some important factors to keep in mind:

Use external XML or text files. XML offers search engines a structured and semantic format for indexing site content. And it makes it easier to implement multi-language versions of an application. By keeping your content layer separate from your presentation layer you’ll have a better overall application.

Create Unique URLs for Important Sections. “Creating unique URLs for important sections of your SWF file, based on the keywords for which you want to optimize, will help search engines navigate into your SWF application and provide targeted results for the most relevant content,” wrote SEO expert Damien Bianchi, in a March 2009 article. To create these unique links, you may want to employ SWFAddress or UrlKit.

Use the HTML noscript Tag. It can be a good idea to put important site or application content in side of HTML noscript tags, which effectively puts your content into a search engine spider’s favorite language. If you are using external XML, files, you can even load the content dynamically on the server-side.

Use XSL When Feasible. XSL can define XML formatting and presentation, so you can use it to single XML source to control both Flash content and HTML content, like navigation. You’ll make the entire site’s content searchable and you will be using an effective site development strategy.

Finally, there are decent frameworks out there that maximize SEO when you are using flash. You can try the FLEB-FRAMEWORK here:

Flash is not good for site in SEO. Because flash increase site load time. And most major search engines include this factor in algorithm. And another disadvantage, major google bots have not read flash.

    Thanks

Simple reason behind it is that crawler does not interpret it and the site load is more than usual...sometime the sites need to be contain flash as it makes it attractive as per end user's point of view and it be very effective to show products...

Most search engines cannot read any text that is created with Flash. As a result, using flash may result in a decrease in search engine ranking because the search engine spiders will not be able to crawl over the essential keywords that have been written in Flash.

Make all text load externally via XML. The search engines can read XML files.
