Big Authority Site Competition

If you see a bunch of big authority sites like pcworld, reviews.cnet, bestbuy, do you run and just get out of the way?
My situation - That's what I'm seeing right now for a specific keyword. Some of these authority sites don't have any backlinks or only about 30 or 40. And for this particular keyword, none of these sites are on-page optimized for it - only the general niche. Would you jump for it or find another keyword?
Main Question: To be or not to be afraid of authority sites with little backlinks and little onpage SEO.
