Hi.. I have a question about the google keyword tool..
I select exact match for my query term .. say "dog collars". The results that are returned I am a little unclear on. In my example in the results I get dog
collars with say 5400 monthly searches and [dog collars] with only 880 searches. What is the significance of the brackets [keyword]. If I have selected exact phrase, why the 2 options?
Thanks

You will find Three Options in Google Keyword Tool

    1- Broad Match
    2- Exact Match
    3- Phase Match

Broad Match Means Broad searches of the Keyword or similar keywords..

Exact Match Means that This Keyword is exactly searched X No of time.

Phrase Match Means that This Keyword is used in any phrase Searched X no. of
    times..

    I hope It helps...

Thank you. I've always found Google's keyword tool helpful, but very confusing. Glad that you've cleared things up.

Exact match is my preferred criteria.

It gives you a true reading of the strength of your keyword search so that you don't waste your time, or get too emotionally attached to an idea.

    It's all in the numbers : )

Same here and I do prefer to use those keywords that are exact match with the content and the site. I mean those keywords are worth getting the ranking and so improves the appearance in SERPS.

To my knowledge, the searches work like this:

    Term - dog collars

Broad - the words can appear in ANY order so it include hits on search terms like "Buy big collars for your dog" in the numbers it gives you.

Phrase - The words have to appear in order but other words can also appear like "dog collars for your wife". Hits on this term would appear under the results for "dog collars"

Exact - Marked in brackets, only includes the words you listed and in the order you listed them so only searches for the exact term of "dog collars" would be listed

Exact is the standard that most use to get an accurate picture of the traffic a term gets. The others (broad and phrase) will give you higher numbers but those numbers will not be indictive of the traffic for the term you are using.

As others have said, use exact match figures. As far as the research is concerned, forget the GAKT. Check out Keyword Sniper Pro 2.0. By using just the Adwords keyword tool, you're missing out on a ton of valuable keywords.
