SEO - which tasks should be automated?

I read thru and was wondering which type of SEO tasks should be automated and which should be manual.

I've heard some tasks if automated, will be classified as spam by google (bcoz of unnatural link building). So any kind soul to enlighten us newcomers?

Your better off not doing any automated stuff - you are right, G will classify it as spam and will go after anyone that is caught using it.
