Search volume threshold?

I'm thinking about developing a new product for people wanting to learn HDR photography. It's a niche within photography. According to Google's traffic estimator, there are around 50,000 global searches and 23,000 local (US) searches monthly on the phrase 'hdr photography'.

Is there a rule of thumb on this? I don't want to waste time and money if the audience seems to be too small.

23,000 per month = 766 searches per day. That seems small.

    Don't forget the other part of the equation is competition and it looks like HDR is reasonably competitive... with a tad less than 500,000 competing sites... not to mention Wikipedia, Google images and Smashing Magazine in the top 4 search results in Google.

    The competition may be tough however if yo can set yourself as the expert in the field and you have a passion for HDR Photography no reason why you cant succeed in that niche

      As a pro photographer I think if you REALLY positioned yourself as an expert in the HDR techniques you could make some money off of it. There are a lot of tutorials out there already on this but if you can make something unique and comprehensive I think it would sell.

    It seems like this is a budding niche. I'd say if you know your stuff that it's a good time to establish yourself as an authority. It's a pretty good size and appears to be growing.

    Run your keywords through Google Insights to get a better picture.
