Another Domain Question

Okay, so I'm thinking of starting a new domain. It's got medium competition and searches for the exact keyword of about 20k/month. Unfortunately, all EMDs I search for are taken. I know it's been addressed before, but I'm still uncertain whether it's okay to do a hyphenated domain name. If I'm not going to be advertising where people have to hear my name, and most business will be derived from search engine results, then does it matter? Also, the only available version is a .net but from what you guys say, that's no big deal. Will the hyphens seriously damage my ability to get high up in the SERPs? And is it better to use a throw-away word rather than hyphenate?

So, just as an exampe:

instead of redapplecozies.com, I'd be using red-apple-cozies.com or is redapplecoziesnow.com better?
Whatcha think?

ETA: If I'm not able to buy the domain right this second, can I build a subdomain on another site and have it redirect? Or if I use an existing domain for the redirect? I don't really understand how redirects work as far as ranking.

    Using hyphens in domain will not at all gonna make any effect on your search engine ranking,but using long hyphenated domain will surely effect if you are branding your website,It will not be easy for people to remember it.
    Its upto you if you want to brand yourself or just want to get into search engine using domain having keywords in it.

    if mykeyword.com is not available then go for mykeyword.net, if not available then go with mykeyword.net.

    all have same importance for search engine ranking but never add or remove single word in domain. Google will not count - symbol in serp.

      The .net is still a hyphenated domain. So, then, if the domain is an EMD but with hyphens, that should be okay? I'm not super intent on a brand name - it's more of a service that I'd provide.

      So more like article-writing-service.net (an example only)

        yes if preferable domain is not available then it will be okay. just ignore the symbol dash for seo importance.

    Rather than going for a .net domain registration i will recommend you going for hyphenated domain. Recently i did a test on blogspot blogs for a very non competitive keyword to check its popularity on the serps. I took up two domains - one with xxx.blogspot.com and another with x-x-x.blogspot.com (its not the exact domain i am talking here). I sticked with the same template and got it indexed in a week. I created around 20 links to be shown in backlinkwatch for the hyphenated domain. And saw hyphenated domain rank better.

    In conclusion i will not mind at all going for a hyphenated domain.

      Well, this is a .net hyphenated domain. If all of your SEO efforts were the same for both blogspot sites, I imagine that is good news for me. I'm going to give it a shot. I've got add-on domain space so it'll just set me back a few bucks to register the domain.
