PageRank is an indicator, it doesn't affect anything. It is mostly a measure of IBL's (InBound Links).

That said, all other things being equal, pages with higher PageRank pass higher backlink value than pages with lower Pagerank.

Makes no sense. Google was built on this concept.

Logic would tell you that if it is google's baby, it must affect something.

Thanks for that Paul - sometimes my posts aren't as clear as I think they are..

What I was trying to get across was that the PageRank number - which is what I assume the OP was referring to - is just that, a number indicating PageRank.

A page's PageRank is an aggragate number. It's PageRank is 'earned' through the PageRank calculation. But the number doesn't affect anything; rather, it's overall 'strength' is what dictates the number.

The PageRank concept and formula, of course, is the basis for Google's search engine sorting algorithm, and as such, hugely relevant. But what I took from the OP was, "Does PageRank affect my site?", to which I tried to point out it's "the site that affects the Pagerank number".

Google introduced PageRank and it took them all the way to the top of the Search Engine market,
        it is CERTAINLY important

and it is only awarded to sites that are trustworthy

good content, and quality links that also have PR are the generally accepted methods to obtain them

The best thing to do is just do not worry about PR at all. If you have a toolbar install it. It does have some relevance PR but people are way too obsessed with knowing it. If you are unaware what your PR is then it is better.

So do you believe google actually manually reviews site with backlinks to make sure the link is relevant? I disagree.

PageRank is a big factor in rankings, I have used 4 PR6 back links and had a 100 push in the SERPs for one of my sites, in a very competitive niche.

Page rank matters. Some are saying it is not that important and some are saying that it is important. But the bottom point is Page Rank Really matters.

There are two different PageRanks. The one Google shows in the googlebar and the REAL one, called Internal Page Rank, which we don't see or know.

Its is not really important but it is important, because the normal human psychology visitor only visit 2 to 3 search page but randomly. So page rank is equally important.

Yes, It affects the website. You should get more visitor of your site because if you don't create any back link then you have not get more visitor and finally you site page rank will decrease day by day.

The higher the PR of page that links to and the more important/relevant those links are the higher your pagerank will be.

PageRank was the innovation that launched Google into prominence. But then it had an illegitimate child named Black Hat SEO, and Google had to find new ways to rank pages.

PageRank is still used in Google's ranking formula, but it's only one of more than 200 ranking factors (probably more than 300 by now). So it's nowhere near as important as some people think.

To test this assertion, do an experiment. Run a Google search and check the PageRank of the top 10 results. Do they all have high PageRank? Are they sorted in PageRank order? For most searches, the answers to both questions will be "no".

So sure, PageRank affects your search rankings. But don't waste your life obsessing over it.

I'm not trying to disagree with your initial point, but the reason for this is that PageRank is an aggregate value, while a search provides 'contextual evaluation'.

What it sounds like you're saying is, a higher PageRank isn't necessarily a 'stronger' page, which may be true but is somewhat misleading.

I can create a one-page blog that will outrank CNN - for certain searches. Ranking is search-specific. On the other hand, the higher PR of CNN denotes a 'stronger' site in aggregate than my one-page PR-0 blog.

Not trying to argue, just point out that it's important to understand what PR is, and that it's a 'reflection' of the site and not the other way around, nor does it dictate ranking order, as ranking is always dependent on the search being done.

It's fun to look at but I can do plenty of damage without it...to sites with high/higher PR.

In my experience, I have found that it's value is highly over-inflated...relevancy is the key to ranking for keywords...PR can be too, but I have learned the hard way that relevancy is more important.

There are lots of PR0 websites on Page 1 of Google, it's one of the many factors but you can def make it to page 1 with a PR0 site if you've got solid links to your site, etc.
