How Many Keywords For Homepage

Hi there, I am currently optimizing for a mortgage company website. They have branches almost everywhere in the US. I have optimized the site with 5 keywords all with the location 'New Jersey'.
Eg: Mortgage Assistance in New Jersey, loss mitigation New Jersey etc.

It is a six page website and the client requires 15 service locations more to be boosted, all of them with the same keywords but with different service locations. Is it safe (effective) to build links with multiple keywords to the home page?

I think building inner pages or buying different domain names are better to stay in the safer side. What are your ideas??

All replies appreciated!!

  • Guys, I am already ranking high for the 5 keywords that I have mentioned. They want the same results for 75 keywords.

That is my question, I'm not talking about on-page keyword density.

I n my experience, you do NOT want to dilute your keyword pool on any one page. You should have one main keyword and up to 4 LSI or supporting sub-keywords. If they want to rank for each of their different locations, you should build a page for each location.

Thanks for your reply TravisHarper, What are your thoughts on suggesting them to buy domain names concentrating on the service location as the keyword.

I have played around with that for a while now and I can tell you that I have had no better results with individual domains than I did with sub pages. I would say it would help get them ranked a little quicker but the expense would be high. If the traffic is very high and the competition is strong, then that may be the way you have to go but I would personally use it as a last option.

Yes build inner pages and optimize them. Dont try to get the main domain to rank for 75 words. Also with buying new domains it takes a while to get them ranked and they could get sandboxed, and its extra money. So I would go with 75 pages of keyword optimized content with anchor text backlinks being built to all 75 pages.

    Big project, have fun!

Thank you RealEcon, That helps, but does linking those websites (OBLS from the main website), help to keep them away from sandbox? Any suggestions?

Actually I forgot you were doing location names. So you can either build pages off the main domain or you can build subdomains off the main domain they will be like new sites in Googles eyes so they may not rank as fast as just creating pages off the main domain. Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. And yes if you internally link all the 75 pages together it will help them rank.

    • Answered well RealEcon, So if I go for the inner pages and interlinking, my website as a whole will be getting the boost.

What I have found that works best is optimizing the title tags for two main keywords, and then coming up with combinations of keywords based on those two main keywords.

For additional keywords, it will probably work out best if you build multiple pages on your website, and then backlink directly to those pages with the relevant anchor text.

I tend to agree with the strategy that "RealEcon" illustrated above.

The niche of your website matters a lot to run your online business and it doesn't matter that you have more then one keyword for you homepage.

I have often targeted more than 40 keywords for homepage. Though it's better to have targeted landing pages for each geographical location.

And have you found results?? 40 keywords is too much for me, I believe that if I target more than 5 keywords, I would loose my rankings for the main keyword. The keywords would be inconsistent, I guess.
