Keywords in the domain name?

Do pages rank better for a particular keyword if the keywords are in the domain name itself? Or is it more towards backlinks and content or what? And does anyone know if you can rank well for keywords if they're not in the domain name but you have a subfolder named with a keyword? Thanks anyone.

Sure, your site/page will rank better for a keyword if it is in your domain name, but it's not essential. I don't have a keyword I'm targeting in my domain name. It depends on what you intend to do with your site. Branding can be very effective if you choose to create an authority site rather than a small niche site.

  • Umm... they rank just a little bit better.

Also, they give you an advantage when you make backlinks.

Yes it makes it much easier to get first search engine position for that keyword in your domain name. The most important factor for your site is Excellent Content. Content is King.

Yes, of course. It also give better blacklinks and traffic. But problem is - its almost impossible to provide keywords that are present in domain name, if your domain name is meaningful.

      ...yes, that's exactly right!

I've been domain squatting for several years with keyword rich domain names, hoping that this would happen sooner. It should make it easier to rank, if you put good content that visitors demand.

It still boils down to two things:

      1. Keyword domains are important and always will be... otherwise, it would crush websites for retailers and proper brand name products that don't implement killer SEO campaigns.
      2. Content is king. So, if there's golden nuggets of info on your pages to be found, and you're SEO savvy, you'll do very well, indeed.

All in all, I'd say the formula is still keyword.com + killer content = successs.

You comparing brand authority domain names with SEO + Domain Name validation?

Plus, just because MCutts say the sun is blue, everyone and their dad believes it?

      Sheeshhh...

@OP: Yes, domain names with keywords tend to rank better and faster then other new domain names. Then, there is a affirmation war with Google, if your domain loses that battle, it goes down, just like any other domain name.

But if you try some random searches in 50 different markets you'll see keyworded domain name in Top 5. You can have a answer just by doing this test - takes 5 minutes and you'll see what I mean.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

I think that having your keywords in the domain name will definitely boost your rankings. Search for any keyword and see how many of those results actually have the keyword in the domain.
