Hey.

Is there a such a thing as spam backlink penalty? I have been commenting on high PR non relevant blogs with 1000s of outbound links and my site has dropped a little in SERPs. Or is this the Google dance?

You need to have some high page rank, related blog comments for your site. Dont keep on adding your site links while commenting. Just add one site for one blog comment.

It is better to have some 30 good high page rank, dofollow backlinks from blog comment sites. Just don't build huge backlinks from blog commenting, as this is not the only strategy in building backlinks for a site. So u just concentrate on other off page optimization techniques.

I've also seen where it can help to have some lower PR no-follow links when blog commenting. Makes it look more natural.

All sorts of things could have caused the drop. Was it a large drop or just a few places?

It's unlikely to just be the new backlinks causing the issue. The links just mightn't be good enough to push the page further forward. A drop doesn't mean a penalty. It often just means your page isn't as good as the others - or other newer content.

It was not a large drop, it went from bottom of page 1 to about 15. The other pages are all ecommerce. It had been on page 1 for about 4 months. Not sure if Farmer is anything to do with it as it dropped before the algorithm was rolled out.

Whenever I add a lot of blog comments at once, my site always google dances for a week or so. Try waiting a few days and see what happens.

This might be down to Google's latest Farmer update, rather than punishment for non-relevant links.

Do you do a lot of article marketing?

For sure its not panelty. Its just a routine phenomenon. Just keep backlinking. There is no such panelty for more backlinking because not all backlinks are indexed on same day. In my 3 years experience only 15-25% are indexed by search engines. Rest of them are either not indexed at all, some gets deleted and some are indexed very slowly.

sounds like a Google dance depends on your websites authority status - might take a few days or weeks to see improvements. Had a similar issue recently totally wiped some of my pages off and some pages dropped a few spaces.

First of all it's not a penalty and lets nail this myth once and for all. You cannot get penalized through excessive links or anything that links to your site. If that were the case there would be no cause for SEO at all. All you would need to do is locate who your competition are and then load their sites with loads of spammy trashy links and sit back and watch Google trash their sites to oblivion whilst you sit back happily watching your sites rise through the ashes.

Not going to happen is it?

The worst that will happen is that Google will ignore your links or discount them.

Sounds like a good old Google Dance to me. Just keep doing what you're doing and increase the quality and variety of the back links and you'll be fine. Make your back links landscape look as human powered as possible so lots of variety in the shape and form of the links. Mix it up a bit. Have loads of dofollow, nofollow, directs, redirects and anything that looks like it could have been generated by humans. Oh and that means don't freak out over typos - humans are good at those also.
