I really need to know what to do if only the sub-pages were indexed and ranked, not the homepage? Do you have any ideas? Thanks!

I see this happen for my site when its still new and ranking in the hundreds.

Add a keyword anchor text from one of the ranked pages to point to your root domain. Then add more backlinks to the homepage with the anchor text for the kw you want to rank (this should work even without the 1st step).

I think this is a good advice. Also, you can replicate what you did on the indexed subpage and perform similar SEO technique on the homepage.
