Wordpress SEO: Problem with indexing tag pages

For my coupon and grocery flyer website, I use tags to try and optimize for certain keywords, "Storename" + flyer.

I was told to always put nofollow on tag and category pages but the content on these tag pages always is updated so I thought the search engines would index it for the keywords. I have no other way to optimize for the keywords.

I am struggling as to what I should do or give it more time.

Suggestions?

  • You really shouldn't worry about getting your tag pages indexed. They don't provide any useful content and don't contribute positively to your rankings in any way. It's a waste of time and effort to get your tag page indexed, rather work on your landing pages, optimize them and get them ranked.

      That's terrible advice!

My last site I built has 150+ blog post pages, my Google SERP count for site:domain.com has 250+ pages indexed. Those extra pages are category + tag pages.

If I told you that your site could have 150 pages in Google SERP, or 250+ pages in Google SERP, which one would you pick?

I would (and I do) pick 250+ pages in Google SERPs.

Why on earth would you put a limit on yourself & your site, makes no sense at all.

Those category & tag pages are all one step closer to making a sale. They offer value If your landing page has any value.

Lol, I'm still shaking my head over this one...

But I Think, Optimizing a tag pages somewhere matters. WordPress will not be able to find out a tittle to the tag page, And having many more pages with the same tittle would not be a good idea.

Thanks. I actually added a plugin that lets me add meta and title information to tag pages. I would have thought that would be standard in Wordpress.

It is a standard If you add the wordpress short-code to your own theme.

That plugin your running, I'm 99.9% sure they are running basic wordpress code/tags.

SERP = Search engine results page
      SEO = Search engine optimization

Listen to yuko. Adding relevant tags and getting those indexed in the search engines can really boost your traffic.

If you find tags that are getting traffic with a landing page that's not very content rich, add more content to that page! (By simply tagging other relevant posts)

I used to run a travel blog that got a ton of traffic from the tags being indexed so they should absolutely be used wisely.

Edit: After looking at your site, I see that you could have a tag cloud on your first page. That will get them indexed.

      Thanks for your reply.

I am going to be a little patient here when it comes to indexing. I have meta descriptions and meta keywords and titles for the tag pages.

I would honestly say to get rid of your Tag pages to be honest. They could actually hurt your ratings
