Best way to learn SEO?

Hey every one,

I'm a complete beginner to SEO. I was wondering what methods/approaches you think are the best to learn SEO for a beginner.

Hi drcatl,

Much of what passes for 'SEO' is either outdated and /or a big pile of BS.
This includes buying and/or automating thousands of back-links, and many other shady dealings.

However:

I also think saying SEO is bull**** is much like saying design is bull**** – the pitch should be leveled by all websites having plain black text on a white background and may the best content win. It may be debatable in a vacuum, but in the real world things are different. ~source

May the best content win = Hey, there's a great idea.

drcatl, You are asking to learn about a subject where "everyone tends to act like a large bunch of ants all following one another."

As a beginner I found Matt Carter's SEO lessons to be very helpful. He ranks websites with high quality backlinks and provides clear examples on how you can do the same. I think it will be the best solid advice you will get as a beginner SEO.

You really do have to just jump in there and do SEO for yourself to really get the feel for it.

Build a small affiliate website and rank it for the product names. You should be able to make cash within a couple of months if you do it right.

Like anything, it's about trial and error. Beat some tough websites and your confidence about the whole thing will grow!

Best way to learn SEO?

You need to see how people do it, and then tweak the strategies a little to fit your plan and determine for yourself if it works.

This particular blog post has a pretty good strategy on backlinking

Disclaimer: This is not my blog or anything, but i've found this post to be particular helpful.

You definitely do not need to buy anything off his recommendation in the post, he's merely sharing his strategy on what has worked for him. For a primer i suggest you take a look at the diagram, and if you like you could try to do something similar and see the effects on your rankings.

There's also a thread somewhere in this subforum , i think it's called the 40 day ranking challenge by Joseph Archibald, which was actually the primer for the aforementioned post's strategy. You'll want to read it as well.

I think you should watch the video tutorials of the SEO related topic. Then there you learn everything about seo. That is very effective for everyone.

Study the behavior of search engines, how they work and what are their purpose actually. Studying such topics in the detail will help you a lot to get the idea of SEO.

If you are new to seo the problem is who you should listen to. You don't want to follow strategies that may not work tomorrow. Therefore follow time tested evergreen seo strategies only. Forget noisy 'guru's' who can't stop waffling.

Seo is an introverts game.

My recommendation is to first read John X factor and Michael Campbell.
Then get on a few lists: VitaVee, Mike Liebner

Research and Google everything, use forums to talk to others like you are doing, find SEO experts who are willing to teach, and take advantage of free tools.

Start off by trying to optimize your website properly.
(e.g. meta tags, keywords in your title tags, etc.)
There is a lot of information you will find in google, youtube etc.

Start a website on a subject you are passionate about...do one quick check to make sure it isn't saturated to the bone (e.g. computers..maybe something WAY more specific). Then just go do it! Experiment, and read up a little. But only doing will help the learning.

Just do it. It you have lots of sites you want to SEO - start them all from day 1 - SEO is easiest if you don't try and hurry it too much.
