What counts for getting backlink "credit".

Hi Everyone,

I've got a couple of web sites that I think should rate well with google. I have good content and I am working on keyword phrases that do not have much competion, but I just can't seem to make any progress in creeping into the higher positions.

I think I've done all of my on-page stuff correctly, but I don't know much about off page optimizations and I'm afraid I may have already wasted a lot of effort.

I just heard that you only get credit for one backlink from a given domain regardless of how many backlinks originate from there, and if you have more than one backlink from a domain then you only get credit for the single backlink that is the best fit for a given search phrase.

Is this correct?

I'm trying to use article marketing to get backlinks, and I assumed that i would get a "Generic" backlink from each article directory that had my author profile referencing my website, plus one anchor keyword for each article I wrote that had the keyword in the author box.

I've written a lot of articles with the same anchor keyword and submitted them from the same sites. Did I just waste a ton of effort?

Is there any other strategy that can help my main page rank well from article marketing? Targeting LSI keywords, targeting inner pages, etc?

Thanks in advance

    Hi PsiCat,

It's not how many competitors that matter, it's how strong the competitors are in the higher position. If you had only 10 competitors, but they were all strong competitors you might never make onto the 1st page of SERP.

    No, that's incorrect.

You only get credit for 1 backlink to the same page from a single page. Having said that, there is only so much link juice to go around from a single website so it behooves you to get backlinks from a diverse network of websites.

No it wasn't completely wasted, however it will benefit you more to diversify your backlink sources.

Yes, there are many many possible strategies that have the potential to help your rank well in the SERP. Most things that have worked over the past 100 years of marketing and advertising still seem to work well for website traffic. Having useful content and promoting through meritorious link building campaigns advertising and any other type of promotion that gets you targeted traffic will indirectly benefit your SEO efforts.

      Thanks Don.

      That's a relief.

It's frustrating to be new to the game when it takes so long to even be able to see a backlink get recognized... and even if everything is done right it still may or may not even show up. There is no feedback to know that what you are doing is working.

At least I know my existing efforts weren't wasted. I'll look to branch out my backlinking efforts.

      Thanks again for your reply.

Your not doing too badly on your SEO. Using opensiteexplorer.org you have a page authority of 40 and 47 followed links from 45 different domains. That's not too bad - although there's plenty of room for improvement. I see your top keyword is, psychic development of which 17 of your links use this keyword phrase.

I note your competitor psychiccourses.com which is at the bottom of page 1 (in the USA) has a page authority of 58.

Basically there is reasonable keyword competition for your terms and that is why you are not ranking well.

You just need to do more backlink building - although from different domains is best and do your keyword research more thoroughly with opensiteexplorer.org

Thanks Petesankey, open site explorer is a neat resource. Just being able to see the numbers of myself and my competition is a helpful to see how far I have to go before I catch up, and when something I do is moving me in the right direction.

Thanks for your analysis, and the tip!

To me you do not appear a naive SEO since your domain is accessing .gov and .edu links in good spammy manner just like your domain's allthingspsychicdotcom selling copy appears on psychicxdotinfo in blackhat manner...
