Also in my own opinion, link farming is a black hat SEO because it is a method by which you try to increase your link popularity without following the search engines' standards.

Yes link farming is a technique of Black Hat SEO and isthe process of exchanging reciprocal links with Web sites in order to increase search engine optimization. The idea behind link farming is to increase the number of sites that link to yours because search engines such as Google rank sites according to, among other things, the quality and quantity of sites that link to yours. In theory, the more sites that link to yours, the higher your ranking in the search engine results will be because the more links indicate a higher level of popularity among users of the Internet. However, search engines such as Google consider link farming as a form of spam and have been implementing procedures to banish sites that participate in link farming, so the term link farming has garnered negative connotations across the Internet.

      Hey Matthew,

Matt Cutts said it best when he called link farms a ponzi scheme and a con game.

These are a group of websites that take content and link back to a website for a payment. This is disgusting in my opinion to say the least - said one marketer.

Sometimes link farms just come in the form of they will give you x number of links for x dollars. Then the IP is the same on all sites, the sites have little or no original content if any at all.

So based on what Matt said... Yep its black hat as they come.

On the World Wide Web, a link farm is any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamdexing or spamexing). Other link exchange systems are designed to allow individual websites to selectively exchange links with other relevant websites and are not considered a form of spamdexing.

Search engines require ways to confirm page relevancy. A known method is to examine for one-way links coming directly from relevant websites. The process of building links should not be confused with being listed on link farms, as the latter requires reciprocal return links, which often renders the overall backlink advantage useless. This is due to oscillation, causing confusion over which is the vendor site and which is the promoting site.

A link farm is a website set up with the sole purpose of increasing the link popularity of other sites by increasing the number of incoming links to those sites.Link farming may certainly be unethical but it does not qualify as being illegal.

A group of websites whose sole purpose is to link is black hat. Putting relevant links to your own websites from your own website network, that's more gray hat and to me perfectly acceptable.

And to correct an earlier poster, it's not "illegal" to use a link farm. No laws are broken in this process.

Link farming is a set of websites that gives you a very fast way of link popularity by making hyperlink to your group of sites. Though, This gives a very fast popularity of your site, Ultimately, Its not an ethical way of process so Google may penalize you for this.
