Backlink Pyramid - Good name or bad?

I was just reading a pdf that found it's way to my desk, it's about SEO and SEM, which is usually what I'm reading anyways, however this one provoked a conscience controversy within myself. Basically, it's just somebody's take on a link web, link wheel, or however you'd like to call it. I guess maybe the author thinks the pyramid imagery projects a sign of strength, however I think when it comes to things online, it's going to hit a subconscious red flag relating to pyramid schemes which plagued the early days of ecommerce.

The content of the pdf is good, and the information seems valid and accurate, even including the latest google algo update info and I don't see anything incorrect or erroneous...

What do you think? Was it a good idea or a bad idea to put pyramid in the title?

Makes me think of 2 things, one postive and one negative.

    1. Egyptians
    2. Pyramid scheme

Ya, pyramid schemes are bad. Egyptians and their rich history, good.

So, yeah, take it for what it's worth, ha ha.

Sorry I may not be much help but was just giving you my first reaction.

Yeah that's what I thought. No help needed, was just asking for opinions. Being that it's my job to check out all the marketing stuff going on out there even down to keeping an eye on black hat things like xrumer, as I have to know what specifically to tell clients if they ask for one thing or another, and to keep my dev crew in the know about what's making it through our spam filters and why. However this person's report is far from black hat, and I found myself thinking about emailing them in regards to their title. Then again, maybe they wanted this sort of reaction. I could see myself putting together something like "The ULTIMATE Black Hat Toolbox" and then merely ranting about how against black hat methods I really am while giving them some good white hat tips.... Hmmm...

So we have one on the fence with me, and one person clearly thinks no way, the term pyramid in marketing is a dangerous one....

      • I would actually like to know that as well. Didn't even think about the fact people could associate "pyramid" with something bad. The thing is just that this type of link structure is called that way. A link wheel isn't the same as a link pyramid. The whole structure just looks like that, a pyramid. But then I see why it would have been better to name it differently

Curious about more thoughts from people.

Like backlinkexcellence said, that's just what it's come to be known as because that is what the structure 'looks' like. So for someone who comes along who actually knows that fact, it won't be a big deal. But if you're trying to pitch a 'link pyramid' to a newbie, then you might have a problem like you described.

If this backlink pyramid is like the food pyramid, it makes
      sense to me.

Good, wholesome high power backlinks build the base,
next level gets skinnier, when finally one gets to
the top to low level, spammy links that one should get
      sparingly.

If you mean a link scheme, then by the following statement:

The content of the pdf is good, and the information seems valid and accurate,
      ...why are you asking?

No pdf would ever just find its way to my desk, that's for sure.
