Hello,

I am new here but I already love this place. I have already learned few things about SEO here thanks to you all. I have two questions about SEO if you allow:

1. I am thinking about changing my website a bit. As I learn about marketing I get new ideas on how website should be created and how should look like. If I make serious changes to my website(but still with the same domain and the same target, clients, products)) will it influence my position at Google much? If I leave "old" website on my server will it help in some way? Or will I have to build my position from scratch again. My domain is 4 years old now.

2. I am not from US. I live in Europe. If I use all the socialmarkers(and other strategies) that work with US websites, will it help my website rankings at google in "local" rankings?(when I search Google I can use "whole" or "local/in your language" option) Or should I look for back-links only in my local area(websites in my language)?

    1. If you change your content, it will affect your google position.

    2. If you are targeting local placement, focus on local directories and blogs.

Thanks. So you say thay all the backlinks that I have on US websites won't take me higher in Google?(when searching in local language)

I wonder if changing most of the content will change anything in my google rankings as far as history of my website is concerned. Will Google see it as "new" website or will it remember it's "first edition"(4 years ago)?

Google looks at backlinks on a global scale. They dont favour US backlinks over Euro backlinks and visa versa. They actually like when a website has backlinks from a wide variety of IP addresses. This looks natural to Google and thats what they want.

If you are targeting a very local area with a website, e.g. your home town. Gathering local links is good simply because the backlinks are from a site that is targeting the same subject or region as you. Backlinks from releated sites are much higher in value than links from un related sites.

So now you may understand that if your site is about selling flowers and you get a backlink from a US site to do with flowers. This link will be valued much higher than a backlink from a website that is from your home town, to do with dogs.

Google looks for relevant backlinks not geographical backlinks.

From reading your posts, it appears that you are worried about losing ranking that you may already have. Is this true? does your site have good rankings already?

The main onpage SEO factor that will effect your rankings if changed is your page title. Keep your page title the same and your ranking will be effected the least.

Repeat the main keywords, the same amount of times throughout your content and you should be ok. Google may rank you higher since your website is showing signs of activity. They dont like stagnant sites.

Thank you all guys. You really helped me. I feel I must change my website because it is a bit out of date. I will keep your suggestions...I will leave page title, "meta", pictures decsription and as many 'old' things as possible. Thanks again. This forum is great.
