hello,
i would like to have your suggestion about local seo business that i run

My first client want to the payment based on success factor such as:
Month 1: increase 20% convertion from start of the project (1st month)
Month 2: increase 25% convertion from previous month
Month 3: increase 32% convertion from previous month
Month 4: increase 2.8% traffic from previous month

Does it sound fair for you ? If there's fee based on performance based... what's the fair one based on your experience ?

i would like to suggest.. "page 1 ranking" include as performance based factor, how about traffic? (my client know that traffic can be faked, but our success to do seo is traffic, right ?)

i need your suggestion for this...

I don't do SEO work so take this for what it's is, my opinion.

What is it the client wants to accomplish?

These goals need to be clear and precise. This is to cover your butt and theirs.

Improving ranking, traffic and sales is way too vague. If you think getting on page one is a major accomplishment but they were expecting to be #1, they aren't satisfied with your work and you think they are being unreasonable, it's going to get ugly.

Getting a site on the first page of google is a measurable goal.

If you redesign their website or rewrite their copy and conversions increase, that is a measurable goal but their needs to be some understanding that you can't guarantee a 200% increase in sales.

How much control do you have over the content on the site?

If you don't have complete control of everything on the website you can't be held 100% accountable for it's success or lack of. You can't be held accountable for copy they provide or if the CEO demands you have pictures of kittens on the homepage.

    SEO takes time.

Month by month percentage based increases to me seems a little unrealistic. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks or months for everything to click.

I think you're better off with a single long term goal plus incentive bonuses if you over achieve.

After six months you expect to see the site on the first page of google. With a complete redesign of the website and professionally written copy (plus some time for split testing) you also expect to see conversions increase by XX%.

If you get the site to #1 and can increase conversions by YY% you get a bonus.

    There are no guarantees

This is just a part of life.

Well, that's some stuff off the top of my head.

Don't ever price your services with a small, local business based on conversions. You're only doing SEO, not web design, not a/b testing, not training their staff in vertical and horizontal sales.

Your job is SEO, and that's to get them #1.
