I am looking into creating a site with a keyword competition of 200k with quotation when I search it on google. Will this take me a long time to get on the first page of google?

200,000 is a little high for my tastes. 100,000 and under is what I shoot for with quotes, and 10,000 and under with the inanchor qualifier.

But if your goal is to get on page 1 of Google, you should spend some time looking at the competition on page 1. They are the ones you're competing with after all, not the 200k other sites.

It really depends on the strength of the competition and the amount of work you are willing to put into it to establish your site as an authority for the niche. It's most likely going to take a lot a consistent link building and new optimized content to rank well for that. If you have a little bit of a budget to work with then it could be easier, but it would still take time and work.

What kind of sites currently rank in the top ten and how strong are they?

The number of results in google has nothing to do with how easy it will be to rank. The only thing that matters is how strong the serps competition is on page 1 of Google.

Example. I am entering a running competition against 5000 other runners. Sounds hard, right? They are senior citizens. Not so hard, eh?

But what if I enter a competition with 10 other runners and they are all Olympic athletes. Much harder, yes?

Nevermind how many sites are in Google.
Analyze the competition on page 1.

knowing the competition is how you tell if you can win the race or not.

Check all 10 sites, or at least the ones above the fold. Sometimes a site can rank really high with low backlinks because it has high trust backlinks. (Which aren't generally .edu blog comments, by the way.)

If you check all 10 or the ones above the fold, you'll get a much better picture of what it will take to get your site there too.

Without knowing the keyword, it's hard to say. 200k is a pretty good number in my opinion and experience. I also concern myself more with the allintitle: and allinanchor: results, as that is your actual competition in the end... people who have the keyword in their title and anchor texts, many of them actively looking to optimize for that term.

It also depends on what the competition is like on the first page... it could be only 200k results in quotes but they could all be ultra-high-authority sites... it really varies without knowing the keyword.

It depends on how your unique content is related to your targeting keywords. Google algorithm finds for keyword density, keywords in meta tags, heading tags, content and image attributes at all. If your targeting keywords fullfil with all of google algorithm and you have to put frequent updates, you keywords getting rank in 1st page of Google search engine.

100,000 is the advisable results in order to compete. But it also depends on the niche competition. So better to make a Keyword research first.

    Sound advice from Warriors here.
I would add it's worth targeting a number of long-tail keywords as well so you can be ranking high for them whilst you move up the search ladder for your main keyword.
IMO it's worth investing in a Keyword Research tool such as Market Samurai which tells you if your keyword is in your competitor's Title and Description - valueable information!

Bro you're going for the big whale. Instead go for small sharks and fish. Like Instead of that keyword that gets 200k searches, go for 4-5 50-60K searched keywords.

Maybe you can use tools like traffic travis to anaylyze your competition. I used traffic travis to analyze my top 10..it shows 4/5 stars relatively easy for the competition..probably because of the top 10 are not optimized for the keyword that I'm after..but what worries me is that the PR and Age of the domain are quite high and old..average 3-5 for PR and age is (this is where it became a bit weird..some PR 3 sites are 0 in age..) some are 4,8,9,12 years old..

Yes, here you have to use your practical experience, even keywords in millions searches don't perform well, so it is very important to understand the keywords.

From my experience, this is not the best way to access your competition. Yes,it is something to be aware of, but what you really need to do is take a look at the top 10 guys in google ranking for your keyword. Do they have the keywords in the title, url, description and headings? What kind of backlinks do they have coming into their site?

These are far more important factors in determining if you will be able to outrank them.
