I was asked recently, "What plugins do you use on your blog?"

It's a great question, so I took a look at my plugins section and made a list of them. Here they are (in alphabetical order)...

Advertising Manager (free) - for easily monetizing your blog with Adsense and other advertising networks.

Akismet (free) - automatically trashes spam blog comments.

All in One SEO Pack (free) - best seo plugin.

CommentLuv (free) - encourages other CommentLuv blog owners to leave comments on your blog.

Contact Form 7 (free) - easily create a 'Contact Us' form on your blog.

DoFollow (free) - makes your Comments links dofollow.

Facebook Comments for WordPress (free) - allows visitors to posts comments on your blog and their Facebook profile at the same time (great for free viral traffic).

Facebook Like (free) - as above.

Global Translator (free) - automatically translates your blog into 48 other languages.

Google Analytics for WordPress (free) - track who is visiting your site and how they get there.

Google XML Sitemaps (free) - search engines love sitemaps.

cbnet Ping Optimizer (free) - minimises pings when you're just making changes to your blog so that the search engines don't see you as a spammer.

PopUp Domination (paid) - great popup optin solution.

Pretty Link Lite (free) - create short, eye-friendly redirects.

      Hi Stone,

I'm not an expert on that but I think that it all depends on your plugins. Some will require more information than others when your blog pages are loading, and some won't require any at all.

Plug ins can slow down your wordpress if you aren't careful and it is best to limit it to the ones you absolutly need. but I have worked on sites with 20 plug ins and more that were still up and running fast! Recently I downloaded a bookmarking plug in and it slowed down my website considerably. It is just a little trial and error.

It depends on the plugin, basically if the plugin is a back-end tool, and doesn't run on the front end loop it will not affect load times at all. But if the plugin has allot of functions that connect with the front end operations they can slow down a page considerably. It really all depends on the plugin, how its written and what it does.

I use several plugins that only load when on the plugins page, so they affect load time none. while others can dramatically slow down a site.

Most front end things should be hard coded if at all possible because most front end plugins need to run on every page, giving you extra load on pages that that plugin isn't even doing anything.

        Thanks Jill.

Wonder what "commercial" means? Would that include a blog with affiliate links on it?

Just realized that I had a whole other page of plugins that I forgot to list

    Here they are...

SexyBookmarks (free) - encourage visitors to social bookmark your site on dozens of different services including Digg, StumbleUpon and Delicious.

Simply Show IDs (free) - very handy if you want to easily know the ids of categories, posts, pages, etc.

Subscribe To Comments (free) - allowing visitors to be notified of any follow-ups to the comments they've made encourages more activity on your blog.

TinyMCE Advanced (free) - adds more text formatting toolbars for when you're writing a new post or page. For example, allows you to easily add tables to a post.

TweetMeme Retweet Button (free) - adds a nice 'Retweet' button to the top (or bottom) of your posts and pages.

WordPress Related Posts (free) - creates links to related pages on your blog at the end of your posts. This is great for SEO.
