NEED help to get off the third page in google!

Okay, I am learning as I go and trying to do my best with reading and trying new things. I am STUCK on the third page for one of my keywords. IT is a high competition work but I honestly thought to get to the second page would be easier. Anyway, I am back linking as much as I can with a variety of methods. I have seen page two of google for a few days and then today back to third page! Anyone have any ideas on how to turbo charge this thing? I am getting frustrated but will keep on keeping on!! I know I can get to the first page....I just KNOW It!! Anyone have experience with going from the third page to the first in google with a high competition word??? HELP ME!

    Check your competitors on the first and 2nd page, see what they are doing, where they are getting backlinks from, and you do the same.

      Good advice. I have a competior that only has 500 or so baclinks when i have over 36000 he is number one for the phrase. I think it obviously then has more to do with ofsite SEO and onsite also.... ie Fresh content

      And we have a higher page rank then him - page rank 5, bizare!

    Thanks for the input! I did spend a majority of the day today analyzing on site seo and my competitors. it seems they love to buy directory submissions.
