What is the best way to do keyword research?

I have explored a few different options to do keyword research, however I'm finding that people use different methods. What I need to know is:

1. The best method to do keyword research for Article Writing.

2. The best method to do keyword research for finding a niche.

I don't need to know how to do keyword research for PPC or SEO. Although the method may be similar but there has to be some key difference.

Any ideas? Thanks!

For most of the keywords that I want to rank for, here's normally what i did,

    1) Look up on google adwords keyword tool for keywords that you want to rank for that is relevant to your website. I set the settings so that I will be around 1000 to 10000 for global searches and the average CPC to be at $1. I did it it with exact search rather than broad.

    2) Next I look up in google to check what's the competition like for the keywords I choose. Normally I if the I type in "keywords" in the search box and the results shows more than 2 million competing pages, I would just ditch it. And I'll make sure that the first page has at least a mix of 3 PR0 and PR-NA websites on it.

    3) Just to be sure, i check my keywords in micro niche finder to check the SOC value and see if it's easy to rank.

    4) If you are doing this for adsense websites, you might want to check your keywords with spyfu to check if the CPC is at least $1.

    Regards,
    Shafiq

          I'm just wondering about this:

Most people talk about being careful while choosing a niche. My opinion is that it's not the niche that really matters, as long as you choose keywords that don't have much competition.

What do you think about it?

Please help me understand why Shafiq chose a figure of 2 million. I saw a post on clickbank where somebody mentioned a figure of 50k and anything over that in search results would be a bad idea.

Thats for me is just a rough guide. Find what works for you and stick to it. If your competiting pages is 10 million but the first page competition is low, I don't see why not you go for the keyword. It's not the number of competition you need to analyze but also the strength of your competition. I have a few urls that's in page 1 ranking of google with absolutely NO backlinks. Just pure content with solid onpage SEO optimization. And with this google panda update, my web traffic is sky rocketing just because of good content and solid onpage optimization. And mind you this competing pages have a number of above 10 million for some.

It's started to make sense to me. This would be a good idea in case you want to create your own website. How would that apply to article writing? I cannot figure out on which page my EA article will show up if the strength of a competition is low. I saw an EA article on first page of Google results for a specific keyword. I wrote an article on the same keyword. When it got published, neither the other article nor mine shows on the first few pages of Google for the same keyword. So looks like I wasted my time.

It takes time to write an article, but when you don't get results, it is disappointing.

Good that it starts making sense to you. It took me quite a long time to understand how keyword research is done. It may not be the perfect solution but that what works for me.

And yes, this method is best for websites that you want to rank for. But i've been creating backlinks from article directories straight to my home page url and noticed that the bounce rate from analytics is high but from another website where my posts are backlinked from link baiting, the bounce rate is low. Low as in only 1% to 2%. I will be doing a case study about this and maybe post it up here on the forums if i have the time.

Don't be mistaken about submitting content to article directories. Correct me if i'm wrong but from what i know, articles submitted to directories are purely for syndicating and also provide backlinks for the keyword you want to rank for by putting them in your author's resource box with anchor text. Most article directories suffered quite a lot in rankngs due to crap content so google is trying hard to filter that out in the search.

What i'd suggest you do for article marketing is to write quality content not only just for search engines but for readers too. This will let your readers have trust in you and therefore will improve your article's CTR. And if your article is good, you might even get link baiting. Which google loves even more...

            Does this answer your question?

firstly, are the keywords popular? do many people search them as keywords everyday.
secondly, is there strong competitor ranking in the first page that you almost can't surpass.
thirdly, not to optimize the pop keywords at beginning.

Selection of keywords and niches can directly affect your ranks and waiting time periods over the net. Experts suggest webmasters of newly launched websites to target less competitive terms because usually, faster ranks would be achieved then. Keyword suggestion tools are valuable but you need to know what terms to select.

For example, try choosing fields about which you do have information and not necessarily looking for most profitable ones, in terms of publishing ads on sites.

The way I like to find a niche is by going to the affiliate company I want to promote and find a product that looks good to me. Wether it be cj.com clickbank ejunkie amazon or whatever.

Once I find a product I scroll the main site page for keywords that sound good. I then find as many synonyms as I can for each keyword or word. I play with this until I have a bigger list of decent keywords. I do research on each keyword and find the ones that are best suited for my needs.

I basically let my keyword research determine what niche I am going to promote.

As far as articles, I take the niche I am promoting and search yahoo answers or any other answer sites for questions. This will usually give me a good idea of what people are looking for.

I always go with the rule of keywords that have at least 3000 searches per month (500 is the absolute minimum depending on the product) and less than 20k competing pages using the "keyword" search in google.

I can try and help with this one.

Ok, so I use a tool (won't mention any names) to do this. Put in a general keyword like 'dog', and then generate other related keywords. From there I would then order it by exact match and try to get at least 1,000 a month (the more the better but you can also go for less).
Then you need to make sure the keyword is a buying keyword. There used to be a great tool that would do this, but the site isn't working at the moment. So instead I would check out the Adwords CPC for the keyword. Try to multiply it by the no of exact match keywords a month. If you get a value over 1,000 then it's probably a good fit (E.g. 1,000 searches x $1 CPC). Remember the exact searches are 45% of what the total searches are. This is roughly what the top site in google can expect from the overall search traffic for that keyword.

Then you need to access your competition on page 1. How well optimized are they. Do they have keywords in the title, url, description and also the headings? How many backlinks do they have? Are they high PR backlinks.
If you think you can outrank them then get to work.

That's it in a nutshell. There is a lot more to it, but for now thats a good start.
