Analyizing Compettitor backlinks

If my exact match keyword is cigarette lighter and I go to market samuari seo competition module and study the top websites the number 1 site has 2k backlinks but for the anchor text cigarette lighter he only has 50 backlinks. So if I am trying to rank for cigarette lighter do I only need to worry about the 50 backlinks or all 2 thousand?

    I am not an expert at this but I am pretty sure that backlink #'s do not matter. It is the quality of the links You definitely should go for as many as you can and the anchor text will surely help a lot!

      It's hard to say. You just need to keep throwing backlinks at it until you pass them up. Make sure your on page SEO is optimal first though.

      Thanks, I know to use quality I guess what I am getting at is...... since only 50 BL out of 2000 BL's are anchored with the KW cigarette lighter and the other BL's all use some other random anchor text could I beat him out with say 500 quality BL's using the anchor cigarette lighter and rank for that KW? Im guessing since most of his BL's dont use cig lighter that he isnt really trying for that KW it's just he is the closet site google found to rank for it. Also, My site will have all the proper on page SEO.

    Quality backlink def make the big difference I have outranked sites with half the amount of backlinks, I just made sure mine were of good quality and from a range of sources, however SEO can vary for different niches and there are more factors to take in than just backlinks, like age of domain for example.

      I just ranked a brand new site (amazon niche product) with hardly anything but a few social bookmarks from socialmonkee.

      Other sites of mine I have noticed outranked others with a lot more backlinks. On Page SEO is also important to help rankings. But I agree with you, if you buld 500 quality backlinks with good on page SEO you should at least give this competitor a good run for their money.

    You can only try and analyze...if you beat your competitor for the same keyword by backlink building it means he has only a few backlinks for that specific keyword.
    But since Google has changed their algorithm quite recently it might affect some other factors as well...

    Well, you have to count their targeted keyword back links mainly but you would also have to count those 2000 back links as IP address is also counted and home page of site may also be linked to these 2000 sites so this is also one factor.

    Not 50 and not 2000. It depends on other 1,950 backlinks. If they are related to the main keyword i.e cigarette lighter, You can not rank as this site with having 50 backlinks. Also can you make 50 backlinks exactly from the pages that website made? I think no.
    So i suggest you to make backlinks for your website from powerful sites to make sure about ranking of your site.

      I would agree with this. What you want to ideally focus on is high PR backlinks. This will count for a lot more than 2,000 backlinks (assuming that they are all low quality).
